Religious Involvement And Dispositional Characteristics As Predictors Of Work Attitudes And Behaviors, Tami Leigh Knotts
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation was to empirically examine the effects of (1) religious involvement on job attitudes, (2) dispositions on job attitudes, and (3) religious involvement on workplace behaviors. This study also assessed whether job attitudes mediated the effect of religious involvement an workplace behaviors or the interaction effect of religious involvement and dispositional characteristics on workplace behaviors.
Higher levels of religious involvement were hypothesized to lead to more positive work attitudes and behaviors. Conservative and self-transcendent values along with positive well-being were expected to lead to positive attitudes at work. The effect of religious involvement on work behaviors …

Internal Pastoral Changes In A Growing Church, John G. Kearns
Internal Pastoral Changes In A Growing Church, John G. Kearns
ATS Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to discover how pastors of growing churches change internally. The necessary functional changes for the pastor of a growing church have been previously identified, but not all pastors are able to make these external changes. This study researched the internal changes that are a necessary prelude to changes in function. Church growth literature, Scripture, and leadership literature from both the church and the marketplace, were surveyed in order to lay the groundwork for this study.
Thirty-two pastors were interviewed based on their meeting the following criterion: pastoring a church during the time that worship …

Anabaptists And Postmodernity, Susan L. Trollinger, Gerald Biesecker-Mast
Anabaptists And Postmodernity, Susan L. Trollinger, Gerald Biesecker-Mast
English Faculty Publications
The title of this book was intended simply to bring together two concerns: Anabaptist identity on the one hand and our postmodern cultural moment on the other. Thus the purpose of the book was to inquire about the relationship between the two. The aim was to seek answers to such questions as what it means to be an Anabaptist today, the extent to which postmodernity presents problems and possibilities for Anabaptists, and how Anabaptists ought to live out their faith in the contemporary context.
Better Safe Than Sorry? Y2k, Preparation, And The Foreclosing Of The Future, Susan L. Trollinger
Better Safe Than Sorry? Y2k, Preparation, And The Foreclosing Of The Future, Susan L. Trollinger

My purpose in taking a rhetorical approach to Y2K discourse is threefold. First, by suspending the question of h·uth and asking a question of rhetorical effects, I can take this popular discourse seriously without granting at the outset its claim to truth in its predictions. Second, a rhetorical approach enables me to study how the discourse works and what its effects are. Third, a study of its workings and effects may provide occasion to move beyond the binary oppositions Y2K discourse seeks to pose between belief and unbelief, preparedness and foolishness. Resisting those binaries allows one to answer other questions …

The Little, Narrow, Prison Of Language: The Rhetoric Of Revelation, Richard Bushman
The Little, Narrow, Prison Of Language: The Rhetoric Of Revelation, Richard Bushman
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
I want to raise an old question about Joseph Smith’s revelations, one that came up early in Church history when plans were first being made to publish the compilation of revelations called the Book of Commandments.1 The question is about the language of the revelations. Joseph noted in his history that at the November 1831 conference in Kirtland where publication was approved “some conversation was had concerning revelations and language.” This was the occasion when William E. McLellin, apparently the leading critic of the language, was challenged to make a revelation himself, and failed. Joseph said the Elders at the …
The Colonization Of The Mormon Mind, Richard Bushman
The Colonization Of The Mormon Mind, Richard Bushman
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
The title of my talk doesn't shed much light on my topic. This past week, when I told people about the talk, the title mystified them. What can be meant by the colonization of the Mormon mind? The phrase is both inscrutable and ominous. Has the Mormon mind been colonized? Are we under the control of an imperial power without knowing about it?
Because of the obscurity of the title, I want to explain what the talk is about. It has two parts, an autobiographical section and a historical section, which are interrelated. I am going to talk about myself …
