Perceived Parent-Child Relationship And High-Risk Behaviors Among Christian College Students, Karla G. Lavin Williams
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Background. Adolescents and young adults today are participating in high-risk behaviors such as dangerous sexual behaviors and drug and alcohol abuse at high rates. An increased incidence of negative effects associated with the aforementioned behaviors has led researchers to examine factors that influence and protect adolescents from certain devastating effects (Davis, Hendershot, George, Norris, & Heiman, 2007; Goldstein, Bamett, Pedlow, & Murphy, 2007; Hamilton, et al., 2007; Hingson, Heeren, & Winter, 2006; Hingson, Heeren, Winter, & Wechsler, 2003; Hingson, Heeren, Zakocs, Winter, & Wechsler, 2003; McCarty, et al., 2004; Mokdad, Marks, Stroup, & Gerberding, 2004; Mosher, Chandra, & Jones, 2005; …

Near Death Experiences And The Christian Gospel: Concord Or Conflict?, Kenneth Lance Tyler
Near Death Experiences And The Christian Gospel: Concord Or Conflict?, Kenneth Lance Tyler
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The near-death phenomenon has initiated a new debate over Jesus' and Paul's claim in the New Testament that the gospel message therein outlines the only way to salvation. Despite twenty-five years of writing and research by near-death (NDE) advocates the dispute continues not only over the disparity between the gospel and NOE but over the origin and meaning of the near-death experience itself. Initially it was medical and pharmacological questions that focused the discussions. More advanced theories are being offered suggesting that the right temporal lobe of the brain acts as a "circuit board" or gateway for a range of …

Adolescence And Spiritual Gifts, Joel Campos Muñoz
Adolescence And Spiritual Gifts, Joel Campos Muñoz
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This theory study shows the possible relations between adolescence and spiritual gifts. The study begins with the doctrine of the Holy Spirit, spiritual gifts, and adolescence. The results of this study attempts to link the life stage of adolescence with adulthood. The work attempts to suggest that the Holy Spirit works in the same way in the adolescence as He works in adult life. As a stage of life, adolescence may be a possible time for conversion and the possible time to receive spiritual gifts. The gifts may be the practical means of finding and executing God's will for their …
Apostasy -- A Biblical, Theological, And Pastoral Approach, Octavian Cureteu
Apostasy -- A Biblical, Theological, And Pastoral Approach, Octavian Cureteu
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This thesis concerns apostasy, which responds to a major religious crisis in the life of a believer by a deliberate alienation and abandonment of faith. This crisis involves a conflict on an intellectual, social, or emotional dimension. The problem of the thesis may be stated as follows: How can an understanding of the dynamics of apostasy benefit gospel workers? To this question the thesis answers in three different ways: Biblical, theological, and practical. Chapter Two, the Biblical approach, is a rather detailed survey of two typical cases which serve to define apostasy as a sinful process. The first example, belonging …

Crisis And Growth In Religious Experience, Ken A. Curtis
Crisis And Growth In Religious Experience, Ken A. Curtis
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This thesis represents an attempt to contribute toward the emerging discussion of the importance of crisis in religious development. In this attempt, a number of sources, representing the fields of psychology, sociology, theology, and the more specific area of religious development, have been consulted in order to gain a clear picture of the relationship between crisis and growth in religious experience.
Following the introductory considerations, the thesis begins with a suggested framework for understanding this crisis-growth relationship. This includes a look at the basis and origin for crisis experience, the types of situations in which crisis occurs, and the dynamics …
The Christian Life : Dorothy L. Sayers' Balanced View, Janice C. Karman
The Christian Life : Dorothy L. Sayers' Balanced View, Janice C. Karman
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Dorothy L. Sayers formulates a theory in "The Mind of the Maker" to explain just how man can be said to have been created in the image of God. God, she proposes, is a creative Trinity. The Father carries an idea, complete and whole in His mind; the Son works to reveal that idea; and the Holy Spirit is the power which results from the revelation of the Father's idea. The creation process requires that all three of these parts be present in a balanced unity. In creating man, God placed in him this creative trinity--He gave man the privilege …
