A Biblical-Theological Framework For Human Sexuality: Applications To Private Sexuality, Trent A. Rogers, John Tarwater Jan 2022

A Biblical-Theological Framework For Human Sexuality: Applications To Private Sexuality, Trent A. Rogers, John Tarwater

Biblical and Theological Studies Faculty Publications

What are good sexual acts? It is not that surprising when cultural voices, without reference to God, argue for the inherent goodness of all “unharmful” sexual desires and acts. Regrettably, ethical pragmatism has influenced some Christian sexual ethics, and this influence is particularly evident with the issue of masturbation. What God defines as good sexual acts are those that fulfill his unitive and procreative purposes for sex within marriage. Given God’s unitive and procreative purposes for sex within the context of marriage, we argue that masturbation is a categorically impermissible act because it fulfills neither of these purposes, and we …

Muslim Insider Ecclesiology: Does Insider Movement Contextualization Produce Biblically Fatheful Churches Or A Mere Mosquerade?, Matthew A. Bennett Apr 2020

Muslim Insider Ecclesiology: Does Insider Movement Contextualization Produce Biblically Fatheful Churches Or A Mere Mosquerade?, Matthew A. Bennett

Biblical and Theological Studies Faculty Publications

Contextualization is fundamentally the process of communicating the unchanging message of the Gospel within the changing contexts of the world. Until Christ returns, contextualization will always be an aspect of the missionary task. One contemporary approach to contextualization, the Insider Movement, has risen to the fore of missiological discussion due to its controversial embrace of existing religious forms and identities as potential conduits of biblical truth. Insider Movement advocates working among Muslims teach that one can remain identified socio-religiously as a Muslim while still faithfully following Jesus as savior. While the past two decades have played host to multiple layers …

Christ In The Scripture Of Islam: Remnantal Revelation Or Irredeemable Imposter?, Matthew A. Bennett Apr 2020

Christ In The Scripture Of Islam: Remnantal Revelation Or Irredeemable Imposter?, Matthew A. Bennett

Biblical and Theological Studies Faculty Publications

The Qur’an endorses and reveres Jesus, providing Christian missionaries with communicative traction as they can lean into a shared Messiah. Or does it? This article compares the qur’anic Jesus (‘Isa) and the biblical Jesus (Yasua‘) in order to investigate whether or not the apparent similarity extends beyond superficial similarities. By employing Daniel Strange’s categories of “remnantal revelation” and “subversive fulfillment” as a helpful heuristic for assessment, this article contends that the two Jesus characters are not compatible. In fact, the Qur’an’s use of ‘Isa appears to be an attempt to subvert the message and work of the biblical Yasua‘. As …

A Religious Interpretation Of The American Civil War As Evidenced By Biblical Language In Songs And Hymns, Alyson J. Punzi Nov 2019

A Religious Interpretation Of The American Civil War As Evidenced By Biblical Language In Songs And Hymns, Alyson J. Punzi

Channels: Where Disciplines Meet

Both Union and Confederate soldiers claimed the same moral confidence about being on the right side of the American Civil War. Significant studies have evaluated the religiosity of the Civil War, but the religious content of songs and hymns, namely their use of biblical language has not been studied for the insight into a religious interpretation of the war they provide. Because the moral claims appear in songs and hymns and utilize biblical language to interpret the conflict, their role in the war, and the expected outcome, this research is important to provide a full understanding of religion’s role in …
