The Postmodern Church, Timothy C. Lawless Apr 2012

The Postmodern Church, Timothy C. Lawless

Senior Honors Theses

Within the past twenty years, the Church (especially in America) has experienced dwindling membership and attendance, along with a host of other problems. Many of these problems are symptomatic of a massive cultural shift toward postmodernism, leading to discontentment with the Church. In attempting to respond to these challenges, the emergent Church has arisen as a major element of American religious culture. Their methodology and doctrine is heavily influenced by postmodernism, which presents a further challenge for Christian leaders and ministers. This paper will survey the challenges facing the Church, will describe the emergent Church’s origin and response to these …

Resurrection Appearances Of Jesus As After-Death Communication: Response To Ken Vincent, Gary R. Habermas Jan 2012

Resurrection Appearances Of Jesus As After-Death Communication: Response To Ken Vincent, Gary R. Habermas

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

Jesus’ resurrection appearances would in some sense comprise after-death messages. But this designation does not necessarily identify them as the sort of after-death communications (ADCs) that are well-known to readers of this Journal. More generally, to hold that the resurrection appearances were ADCs, at least as Ken Vincent has argued, seems to commit a logical fallacy, so that the form of the argument itself cannot sustain the weight of the conclusion. The most that the argument can indicate is that there are some similarities, not that they are necessarily the same class of events. More specifically, there are at least …

Alive In The Spirit: A Practical, Biblical Insight Into The Person And The Work Of The Holy Spirit, Gene L. Jeffries

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

The world is a stage. Yet the principal players are not men and women... The three principal players are the members of the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Alive in the Spirit answers questions that many Christians struggle with, including "who is the Holy Spirit, and what does He do?" Gene Jeffries illuminates the role of the Holy Spirit in the Christian life and encourages readers to understand His influence in their lives. Jeffries also explores the role of the Holy Spirit in biblical topics such as speaking in tongues, gifts of the …

Culture And Interreligious Understanding According To The Romanian Philosopher Lucian Blaga, Michael S. Jones Jan 2010

Culture And Interreligious Understanding According To The Romanian Philosopher Lucian Blaga, Michael S. Jones

SOR Faculty Publications and Presentations

Culture affects how we interpret our experiences and the way we construct our world. It also affects our ability to communicate with one another. The late Romanian philosopher Lucian Blaga developed a systematic philosophy of culture that explores and explains how culture challenges and at the same time facilitates interideological communication. This article introduces and explains these aspects of Blaga's philosophy and then applies them to the issue of interreligious dialogue. It concludes that Blaga's philosophy of culture promotes a high regard for culture and cultural distinctness and at the same time vindicates, enables, and promotes efforts at interreligious understanding.

"Through The Eye Of A Needle": The Role Of Pietistic And Mystical Thought Among The Anglican Elite In The Eighteenth Century Lowcountry South, Samuel C. Smith

Faculty Dissertations

This dissertation examines the transmission and eventual manifestation of Christian pietistic and mystical thought into the Colonial and Revolutionary lowcountry South. The facilitators of this transmission include the Continental Pietists, who were themselves heavily influenced by the mystics, and British Evangelicals such as John Wesley and George Whitefield, who, even in their public denials of mysticism, nevertheless demonstrated its strong influence in their ministries. Mystical and pietistic expressions impacted the religious, social, and political life of the lowcountry more than has been previously recognized. Evangelical Pietism's mid-eighteenth century infusion prompted some to correctly recognize its subjective (i.e. inwardly focused and …

An Appraisal Of The Leap Of Faith, Gary R. Habermas Jan 1991

An Appraisal Of The Leap Of Faith, Gary R. Habermas

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

Where has the leap of faith concept come from? What has it fostered? Does it provide an adequate foundation for the Christian faith? This article will critique the development of the leap of faith through Lessing, Kant and Kierkegaard. It will then evaluate the theological and philosophical positions that have grown from it and its present status in light of the Scriptures.
