Toward An Understanding Of Our New Sister Synod In India, M. H. Grumm
Toward An Understanding Of Our New Sister Synod In India, M. H. Grumm
Concordia Theological Monthly
At the San Francisco convention of The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod the India Evangelical Lutheran Church was accepted in fellowship as a sister synod. Though this young church is still heavily dependent on our American church for support in money and missionary personnel, it has been accepted as a church in its own right, and it is following a phased plan working toward its own support. The American church may feel a justified sense of satisfaction in seeing a small but living church established in this faraway country through the work of its Mission, and it can also justly …

Some Aspects Of The Asian Situation And Their Significance For Training For Service To The Church, R. Pearce Beaver
Some Aspects Of The Asian Situation And Their Significance For Training For Service To The Church, R. Pearce Beaver
Concordia Theological Monthly
The revival of the ancient religions of Asia is one of the most important factors in the international situation which has developed since World War II. It may be regarded as part of a current worldwide revival of religion, or, on the other hand, there may be some ground to think that the Asian development stimulated a world movement. Religion is now more important as a factor in national and international affairs than has been the case for many centuries. The Asian churchmen, in the book Christianity and the Asian Revolution, state: "Nationalism imparts a new interpretation to religion. Instead …
Imitating The Wisdom Of The Almighty: Ziegenbalg's Program Of Evangelism, Hans W. Gensichen
Imitating The Wisdom Of The Almighty: Ziegenbalg's Program Of Evangelism, Hans W. Gensichen
Concordia Theological Monthly
By a happy coincidence the quarter-millennium jubilee year of the Tranquebar Mission again brought to light a long forgotten but most valuable source on that great pioneer enterprise of Protestant world missions, permitting a unique inside look into the evangelistic principles and techniques employed by Barrholomaeus Ziegenbalg and his co-workers and thus revealing the very heart and soul of their work. It is a small volume of 352 pages, and its full title may be of interest: "Thirty-Four Conferences Between the Danish Missionaries and the Malabarian Bramans (or Heathen Priests) in the East Indies, Concerning the Truth of the Christian …
Notes On Translation Of The Malayalam Bible, Herbert M. Zorn
Notes On Translation Of The Malayalam Bible, Herbert M. Zorn
Concordia Theological Monthly
These notes are designed to point out some of the difficulties of the translator's task, especially if he must transfer thought content into a language that is separated from the original in point of form, culture, distance, and time. It is not the writer's intention to present an exhaustive study of the Bible in Malayalam. Nor does he maintain that the problems dealt with are the most urgent and vexing. Peculiarities of Malayalam make it difficult to make clear some of the vexing problems to one not familiar with the language. Enough examples, however, will be cited to remind us …

The History And Development Of The Hindu Scriptures, Robert John Fiore

The Life And Labors Of Eduard Raimund Baierlein, Walter P. Schoenfuhs
Bachelor of Divinity
One cannot properly appreciate Baierlein's contributions unless one understands what has been accomplished before the missionary’s arrival. Thus, besides sketching his biography, the thesis will also discuss the early Christian missions among the Chippewa Indians in Michigan and the missionary activities in India before Baierlein's arrival. Particular emphasis will be devoted to Lutheran mission work in these countries.

Lutheranism In India, Herbert M. Zorn
Lutheranism In India, Herbert M. Zorn
Concordia Theological Monthly
Lutherans in India have become a considerable factor among Christians. The first Protestant missionaries, Ziegenbalg and Pluetschau, were Lutherans. Lutheran missionaries had a strong influence in the early work of some of the non-Lutheran missions in South India. They can be found in the southern tip near Nagercoil, north and east of Calcutta near the Burma border, in central India. and even in Pakistan. There are Lutherans who speak Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Santali, Briya and several other languages and dialects. There are missions with only a little over two hundred members, and missions which have been replaced almost completely …

Our Missions In India And China, O. H. Schmidt
Our Missions In India And China, O. H. Schmidt
Concordia Theological Monthly
The second century - a century of mission expansion! What an appropriate slogan this would be for the second century of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other states! As we observe the one hundredth anniversary of the founding of this church organization, and as we give thanks to the Lord for the blessings of the past century, we should like to express the hope that the second century of our synodical existence will be made a century of mission expansion. And in order to stimulate interest and prompt action along this line, we beg our readers briefly …
The Greatest Missionary Problem, H. Nau
The Greatest Missionary Problem, H. Nau
Concordia Theological Monthly
The greatest missionary problem facing the Christian Church of the future is the world of Islam, the Moslem world. While the pagan world is comparatively well stocked with Christian missions and missionaries - comparatively well, we say, because we know only too well that in some parts of the pagan world the missionary occupation is but a skeleton one - the world of Islam has been touched only on its outskirts, its fringes.

Dr. E. A. W. Krauss, in his Lebensbilder, calls Heinrich Melchior Muehlenberg the patriarch of the Lutheran Church in America. Dr. A. L. Graebner, in his Geschichte der lutherischen Kirche in Amerika, declares that he was the "greatest man whom God bestowed upon the American Lutheran Church of the 18th century" Dr. G. Fritschel, in his Geschichte der lutherischen Kirche in Amerika, writes of Muehlenberg: "So eng war er mit all lhren Interessen verbunden, so hervorragend erscheint er in allen ihren Teilen von Neu-Schottland (Nova Scotia) bis Georgia, dasz die Geschichte der Kirche seit seiner Landung 1742 bis zu seinem …
