Using Sermon Text Archives To Investigate The Construction Of Social Values: A Proposal For A Collaborative Research Agenda In Social Epistemology, Daniel Roland

Daniel Roland

This article presents a detailed description of a research agenda and methodology inspired by Jesse Shera’s notion of social epistemology as the study of “the ways in which society generates new knowledge, disseminates it, and uses it to contribute to the values the society seeks.”1 The research agenda is ambitious and echoes the call that Shera put forth with Margaret Egan that librarianship be a discipline “for the effective investigation of the whole complex problem of the intellectual processes of society.”2 The research agenda focuses on sermons as a communication medium that significantly influences the social construction of knowledge. With …

Gregory Of Nyssa On Language, Naming God's Creatures, And The Desire Of The Discursive Animal, Eric D. Meyer Dec 2011

Gregory Of Nyssa On Language, Naming God's Creatures, And The Desire Of The Discursive Animal, Eric D. Meyer

Eric Meyer

The controversy between Gregory of Nyssa and Eunomius of Cyzicus over the origin and nature of human language might profitably be mapped across the tension between the two creation narratives in the opening chapters of Genesis. Eunomius, emphasizing the hexaemeron, finds the world a place of order divinely structured; Gregory reveling in Paradise, theologizes in a more mytho-poetic mode. Eunomius places great weight on the text’s assertion that God verbally calls the light “day” and the dark “night”—a clear indicator for him of the divine origin of language.1 In contrast, Gregory calls upon the moment in the Paradise narrative where …

The Modesty Campaigns Of Rabbi Amram Blau And The Neturei Karta Movement, 1938–1974, Motti Inbari Dr.

Motti Inbari Dr.

The article examines the modesty campaigns led by Neturei Karta circles in the period 1938–1974 under the leadership of Rabbi Amram Blau (1896–1974). This study was made possible following the discovery of Blau’s personal archive. It explores the defensive stage of the modesty campaign that was aimed mostly to strengthen the Haredi enclave and to separate it from secular Jerusalem with the establishment of the modesty patrols. It discusses the offensive campaign with the examination of the struggle against mixed swimming pools and against a club operated by Working Mothers’ organization. The second stage was intended mainly to reinforce Neturei …

The Rebirth Of The Death Of God: Radical Theology Politicized, Political Theology Radicalized, And Radical Politics Theologized In The Work Of Clayton Crockett And Jeffrey Robbins, Mary-Jane V. Rubenstein Dec 2011

The Rebirth Of The Death Of God: Radical Theology Politicized, Political Theology Radicalized, And Radical Politics Theologized In The Work Of Clayton Crockett And Jeffrey Robbins, Mary-Jane V. Rubenstein

Mary-Jane Rubenstein

This article offers a critical reflection on the mutually resonant recent works of Clayton Crockett and Jeffrey Robbins, both of whom expose “radical the- ology” as insufficiently political, “political theology” as insufficiently radi- cal, and “radical politics” as insufficiently attuned to theology. In light of these shortcomings, they offer a radical political theology as a “necessary supplement” to the project of radical democracy—which is to say a politics of, by, and for “the multitude.” This article tracks the shifting and occasion- ally conflicting contours of this radically democratic theology.
