Letting The Body Lead, Amanda Boggs
Letting The Body Lead, Amanda Boggs
Masters Theses
Letting the Body Lead is an exhibition and workshop series that focuses on embodiment in social context and invites attendees to engage with the work, both as viewers and active participants. Embodiment in social context refers to the understanding of lived experiences in the body. Within my creative practice, I explore the body's creativity, knowledge, and agency while bridging and brining together the fields of fine arts, movement-based and socially just art making. I believe in the transformative potential of how movement and contemplative practices can support a more liberated way of being both within an individual and, by extension, …

What Is Man, That You Are Mindful Of Him? The Harmony Of Substance Dualism And Mbti, Reilly Larose
What Is Man, That You Are Mindful Of Him? The Harmony Of Substance Dualism And Mbti, Reilly Larose
Philosophy Student Projects
The substance dualist philosophy of mind and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator share many philosophical commitments which harmonize together. I make the argument in this work that when taken together, both theories aid each other in making their claims meaningful. With such a union, both theories have new directions to explore for mutual gain and open themselves up to consistency of thought in the face of critique.

Somatics Research Bibliography: A Working Tool For Somatics And Somatic Psychology, Eleanor Criswell Hanna
Somatics Research Bibliography: A Working Tool For Somatics And Somatic Psychology, Eleanor Criswell Hanna
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Many years ago when Somatics magazine was young, it occurred to me that it would be valuable to collect and publish research article references in Somatics magazine that were relevant to the different somatics disciplines to encourage the development of the field. There were next to no studies devoted to Somatics itself, but there were many studies devoted to the elements of somatic practices. Somatics is a multidisciplinary field. It builds on the research findings from many fields, such as anatomy, physiology, neurophysiology, psychology, dance, biomechanics, and education. The references are selected to be suggestive to the interested researcher and …

Diverse Mindfulness Practices For Bipolar Recovery: Qualitative Study Results, Sasha Strong
Diverse Mindfulness Practices For Bipolar Recovery: Qualitative Study Results, Sasha Strong
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
This study investigated the lived experience of Buddhist-informed mindfulness practice and its utilization in recovery from bipolar disorder (BD) in 9 adult participants. Established mindfulness based interventions (MBIs) decontextualize mindfulness practice from a Buddhist theory base, omitting conceptual frameworks that may have adaptive value in recovery from BD. In interviews, participants reported blending techniques learned from various Buddhist lineages throughout the course of their recovery, as well as a variety of other contemplative practices such as techniques to cultivate adaptive emotions, devotional practices, visualization practices, embodiment practices, investigative practices, and informal daily practice. Mindfulness practice for recovery from BD is …

A Fractal Epistemology For Transpersonal Psychology, Terry Marks-Tarlow
A Fractal Epistemology For Transpersonal Psychology, Terry Marks-Tarlow
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
The role of science has been controversial within the nascent field of transpersonal psychology. Traditional linear and reductionist models are insufficient to address rare and unreproducible states of mind, fringe rather than normative experiences, and highly personal or culturally specific aspects of awareness. Through a fractal epistemology this paper introduces novel metaphors, models, and methods within a more holistic, organic, and synthetic branch of science. Principles of the epistemology illuminate observer dependence, fuzzy boundaries, recursive patterns, and higher dimensional phenomena that emerge within the infinite expanses between ordinary, finite (Euclidean) dimensions.

Mindfulness Based Intervention For Needle Phobia: A Pilot Study Of Dissociated Ego State Resolution, Genine P. Smith, Glenn Hartelius
Mindfulness Based Intervention For Needle Phobia: A Pilot Study Of Dissociated Ego State Resolution, Genine P. Smith, Glenn Hartelius
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
This pilot study was designed to investigate the efficacy of a mindfulness based intervention for the treatment of needle phobia. The research question was whether one session of the dissociated ego state [DES] trauma release intervention would result in significant and durable release of needle phobia. It was hypothesized that the process tested in this study may reduce needle phobia by locating, identifying, and engaging with a dissociated aspect of the psyche developed from earlier trauma. Six participants who self reported fear of needles and resulting avoidance of medical assistance completed one 60-minute, individual session of a mindfulness based protocol …

The Distinction Problem Of Self-Deception, Chi Yin Chan
The Distinction Problem Of Self-Deception, Chi Yin Chan
Lingnan Theses and Dissertations (MPhil & PhD)
The essential task of the investigation of self-deception is nothing more than establishing the boundary of it, herein known as the distinction problem of self-deception. Such a boundary is necessary for distinguishing the phenomenon of self-deception from other similar phenomena, especially wishful thinking, and sheds light on the future research of other theoretical questions posed by the phenomenon. Although philosophers have reached a vague consensus on certain necessary elements involved in the phenomenon of self-deception, there is no general agreement on their details, leading to a lack of canonical literature regarding the question of what makes self-deception a unique phenomenon. …
The Dialectic Of Naturgeist In Hegel’S Anthropology: Soul, World, And Bodiliness, Jiho Oh
The Dialectic Of Naturgeist In Hegel’S Anthropology: Soul, World, And Bodiliness, Jiho Oh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The primary concern of the “Anthropology” section in Hegel’s Encyclopedia of 1830 is the relationship between soul and body: how the soul gains an immediate, bodily existence through embodiment, why and how this immediate mode of the soul’s bodily existence is precarious, and how the soul becomes second nature by overcoming the immediate, bodily existence through habit, more precisely. Importantly, the “Anthropology” is the place in Hegel’s Encyclopedia system where the Philosophy of Nature ends, and the Philosophy of Spirit begins. The thematization of the soul-body relationship in the “Anthropology” is thus essentially framed by a broader, systematic problem concerning …
The Property Species: Mine, Yours, And The Human Mind, Bart J. Wilson
The Property Species: Mine, Yours, And The Human Mind, Bart J. Wilson
Economics Faculty Books and Book Chapters
"Arguing that neither the sciences nor the humanities synthesizes a full account of property, the book offers a cross-disciplinary compromise that is sure to be controversial: Property is a universal and uniquely human custom. Integrating cognitive linguistics with philosophy of property and a fresh look at property disputes in the common law, the book makes the case that symbolic-thinking humans locate the meaning of property within a thing. That is, all human beings and only human beings have property in things, and at its core, property rests on custom, not rights. Such an alternative to conventional thinking contends that the …
