Wesley's Limited Alliance With Lockean Empiricism, Kevin Twain Lowery Sep 2000

Wesley's Limited Alliance With Lockean Empiricism, Kevin Twain Lowery

Faculty Scholarship – Theology

This paper attempts to sketch Wesley’s relation to Lockean empiricism by identifying the key issues that seem to spark his objections to Locke’s Essay. The purpose is not to evaluate the validity of Locke’s positions per se but to locate the theological commitments Wesley wishes to defend and to scrutinize the philosophical assumptions he makes to support them.

"This Is Not A Christ": Nietzsche, Foucault, And The Genealogy Of Vision, Gary Shapiro

Philosophy Faculty Publications

There is nothing surprising about linking the names of Nietzsche and Foucault, something that Foucault himself frequently did. We know that the practices of archaeology and genealogy owe much to On the Genealogy of Morals; and in The Order of Things Foucault celebrates Nietzsche for being able to look beyond the epoch of "man and his doubles,'' thinking of the Obermensch as designating that which is beyond man, and for serving, along with Mallarme, as one of the prophets of the hegemony of language in the emerging episteme of the postmodern world. Here I want to focus on other affinities, …

Toward A Cohesive Account Of Reid’S Scientific And Moral Self-Evident Principles, Kevin Twain Lowery Jan 2000

Toward A Cohesive Account Of Reid’S Scientific And Moral Self-Evident Principles, Kevin Twain Lowery

Faculty Scholarship - Philosophy

This paper examines the nature of Reid’s self-evident principles by determining the properties that he claims for them in general, alluding to specific references to science and mathematics in the process. Next, it explores the uniqueness of moral self-evident principles, identifying any obstacles that might preclude a cohesive account. Finally, an attempt is made to remove these obstacles by providing a more comprehensive interpretation of moral principles, one that will relate them more closely to scientific principles. This will rely on notions that are implicit, rather than explicit, in Reid’s writings.
