Cross-Cultural Encounters In Polish And Russian Travelogues About Colonial Indonesia, 1870s-1910s, Tomasz Ewertowski Apr 2024

Cross-Cultural Encounters In Polish And Russian Travelogues About Colonial Indonesia, 1870s-1910s, Tomasz Ewertowski

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article explores cross-cultural encounters and identities discourses in selected Polish and Russian travelogues about the Netherlands East Indies. Poles and Russians could travel to the Netherlands East Indies thanks to advantages afforded Europeans by the colonial system. Their occupations (for example, a privileged tourist, colonial scientist, diplomat) often made them suitable imperial agents. They defined themselves as Europeans but, as Eastern Europeans, they occupied an ambiguous position: Russians came from a land-based, economically backward “empire of the periphery“ (Boris Kagarlitsky 2008); Poles came from a semi-peripheral European nation subjected to foreign rule and, from their common experience of subjugation, …

Transnational Connections; Diasporic (Re)Turns To Indonesia, Jorien Van Beukering Oct 2022

Transnational Connections; Diasporic (Re)Turns To Indonesia, Jorien Van Beukering

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

In the twentieth century, decolonization sparked mass migration movements across the globe as former settlers left newly independent colonies for the former imperial metropole or a new country altogether. In the following decades, postcolonial migrants made new homes and created communities in their hostlands. Eventually, some travelled back to their country of origin, the former colony. Indisch Dutch returns to Indonesia are not uncommon and, although some members of the first generation visited Indonesia as tourists, accounts of (re)turns by the second and third generation are rare. To form a clearer picture of the transnational connections between Indonesia and the …

Objects Of Belonging And Displacement; Artefacts And European Migrants From Colonial Indonesia In Colonial And Post-Colonial Times, Caroline Drieënhuizen

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

As colonial Indonesia never was intended to be a “settler colony”, many Dutch citizens spent only a certain period of their lives there before returning to the Netherlands. However, there were also Europeans, many with Asian-European roots, who had called the colony home for generations and were forced to leave that home after 1945.

All these different types of colonial migrants were displaced and maintained, built and reinforced their relations with the country (whether it was the colony or the “motherland”) they had left. This transnationalism (or, as I argue here, imperial orientation) took shape not only legally or relationally …

Inter-Ethnic Relations In Padang Of West Sumatra; Navigating Between Assimilation And Exclusivity, Mina Elfira

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article contributes to the discussion on how inter-ethnic relations challenge cultural boundaries, in this case Minangkabau matrilineal-Islamic culture in Padang of West Sumatra, Indonesia. This paper will focus on how Minangkabau people establish relationship with other ethnic groups in Padang, a multi-ethnic city. The paper argues that matrilineal principles (descent and inheritance through the maternal line) and Islam are the defining aspects to be considered by Minangkabau people in maintaining relationship with other ethnic groups. Moreover, there is some interplay between the need to protect Minangkabau Islamic-matrilineal adat in maintaining inter-ethnic relations by Minangkabau people and their assimilation and …
