Undoing Ideologies In Diachronic Studies Of English : Towards More Realistic Pictures Of Language Changes From Late Oe To Me, Seiki Ayano

Master's Theses

For over a century, the development of English, especially its two waves of foreign influence during the period between late OE to ME, has been a controversial area. This paper attempts to examine the two instances of foreign influence exerted upon English using several important notions taken from pidgin-creole and bilingual theories to provide more realistic pictures of the two language contact situations. The paper does not provide a clear-cut conclusion, but rather it undoes age-old binary models, e.g., pro-Germanic vs. pro-Romance, introduces new insights, and raises questions regarding sociolinguistic aspects of language contact and the transformation of English during …

Job Opportunities In Virginia For Foreign Language Students, Patricia Lightfoot Brown May 1978

Job Opportunities In Virginia For Foreign Language Students, Patricia Lightfoot Brown

Master's Theses

A New York City taxi driver loses a fare because he does not know Spanish. A corporate president waits in silence while an interpreter closes a deal with important Japanese investors. A nurse in Maine cannot diagnose a complaint because the patient is French-Canadian. A government scientist learns about the latest breakthrough in solar energy a full year after it happened, because the news first came out in Russian. All of these people could do their work better if they knew a foreign language, yet none of their jobs would seem to require a language.

The connection between foreign languages …

L'Imagination - Une Triade - Dans A La Recherche Du Temps Perdu, Lucie Mclawhorn May 1975

L'Imagination - Une Triade - Dans A La Recherche Du Temps Perdu, Lucie Mclawhorn

Master's Theses

Oreste Poursuivi Par Les Furies Dans L'Andromaque De Racine Et Les Mouches De Sartre, Ann Harrington Archer Apr 1974

Oreste Poursuivi Par Les Furies Dans L'Andromaque De Racine Et Les Mouches De Sartre, Ann Harrington Archer

Master's Theses

The Artistic Deformation Of Reality : An Ideological Portrait Of Tyranny In Tirano Banderas And El Señ̃Or Presidente, Roebrta Wynne Cohen Jul 1969

The Artistic Deformation Of Reality : An Ideological Portrait Of Tyranny In Tirano Banderas And El Señ̃Or Presidente, Roebrta Wynne Cohen

Master's Theses

Tyrants speak with many voices, bold many poses, and cast many shadows, but inevitably all wear the same face--the tragic face of tyranny itself. Many artists have painted the portrait; few have captured the essence of its tragedy. Valle Inclan and Asturias, each in his own way, depict the world of tyranny as grotesque and absurd in order to show the tragic condition of man. It is my intent to describe and analyze this grotesque world of tyranny, as portrayed in Tirana Banderas and Senor Preeidente; to compare the techniques used by each writer to create this world; to interpret …
