Ursula: Afro Cultural Identity and Criticism to Women’s oppression in Brazil at the middle of the 19th Century

Ursula (1859), by Maria Firmina dos Reis (Brazil, 1825-1917) is one of the Brazilian’s first novels. It is an abolitionist romance written from the author’s perspective as female of Afro descent. In the plot, the appeal of the love story is diminished by the account of actions and stories of the slaves.
