Defining Black Masculinities: Intersectional Analyses Of Gender, Race And Sexuality In Caribbean And Latin American Literature, 1955 To Present, Jerry Eugene Scruggs Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

The objective of my dissertation is to define and construct parameters for analyzing the Afro-descendant male experience in four specific texts: Mi compadre el General Sol [General Sun, My Brother] (1955), Adire y el tiempo roto [Adire and Broken Time] (1967), Sortilégio II: mistério negro de Zumbi redivivo [Sorcery 2: Black Mystery of Resurrected Zumbí] (1979), and Negro: Este color que me queda bonito [Black: This Color Looks Good on Me] (2013). Black masculinities are distinct and this study sets five parameters: 1) Sexual Prowess, 2) Contentious relationship with the White woman, 3) Violence and Toxic Masculinity, 4) Emotive Numbness, …

“Este Diablo De Vieja”: Revealing The Conversa Voice In Celestina, Morgan B. Mccullough Aug 2020

“Este Diablo De Vieja”: Revealing The Conversa Voice In Celestina, Morgan B. Mccullough

Masters Theses

Due to the extraordinary socio-religious situation of the Inquisition’s aggressive attempt at unification looming over late Medieval Spain, the existence of a converso influence in Fernando de Rojas’ masterpiece, Celestina, is rarely up for debate. However, the way in which this influence manifests itself in Rojas’ only known work remains open for discussion among scholars of the work. Despite critics who struggle to view Celestina as an expression of converso literature, arguments have been made to establish the likelihood of converso status for Pleberio, Calisto, and Melibea, but have yet to look profoundly to Celestina’s own origins. Thanks to …

Isolation Nation: Representations Of The United States In The Photographs Of Rémi Noël, Pascal Aimar, Yves Marchand And Romain Meffre, Mary Elizabeth Downing

Masters Theses

Visions of America vary greatly. There is an extensive variety found in foreign and domestic portrayals of the United States and these representations are affected by both pro and anti-American ideologies. Such juxtapositions can be found in contemporary French photography. In analyzing the works of photographers, Rémi Noël, Pascal Aimar, as well as the collaborative works of Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre, I will argue that their vision of America is influenced by their own perceptions and their viewpoint as French artists. These photographers seek to picture their versions of Texas, Detroit, and New York in ways that reveal aspects …

Poesía E Historicidad En Ernesto Cardenal Y Roberto Fernández Retamar, Alberto David Rivera Vaca Dec 2013

Poesía E Historicidad En Ernesto Cardenal Y Roberto Fernández Retamar, Alberto David Rivera Vaca

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation analyzes the meta-poetic and historicist thought in Ernesto Cardenal and Roberto Fernández Retamar’s poetry. The concept these poets have poetry is closely related to the historical moment of their times. They ponder about poetry and its function, poetic thought that is nourished by a historical consciousness. This close relationship between poetry and history inevitably includes sensitivity to the social situation in their respective countries and in Latin America. These poets seek to understand the concrete reality thus coming closer to the truth of things. The study shows that these poets, based on history and poetic thought, assume their …

Antonio Preciado And The Afro Presence In Ecuadorian Literature, Rebecca Gail Howes May 2013

Antonio Preciado And The Afro Presence In Ecuadorian Literature, Rebecca Gail Howes

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines the literary trajectory of Antonio Preciado Bedoya (1941), a major Afroecuadorian writer, poet and diplomat whose work spans more than 50 years. Although relatively unknown outside of Ecuador, this dissertation will address that lack of recognition by studying his work in the more general context of the African Diaspora. It will reflect upon Preciado’s re-definition of Ecuadorian identity in the new millennium. Preciado is a poet who portrays the Afro presence as central to the national experience of ethnic diversity and the construction of a pluricultural Ecuador. He emphasizes that Afroecuadorians be recognized as an integral component …

Say Hello To Hybrid: Investigating Student And Instructor Perceptions Of The First Hybrid Language Courses At Ut, Rachel Amanda Lamance

Masters Theses

The University of Tennessee began implementing 100-level hybrid French language courses in fall 2011, and this research investigates students’ and instructors’ attitudes toward the hybrid courses. Online surveys were used to assess the perceptions of 210 students and four instructors on five specific aspects of the hybrid courses: technology use and competence, time management, (language) learning, anxiety, and overall satisfaction. Approximately half of students enjoyed their hybrid course, and the data showed trends when factoring variables such as reported grade and comfort with the two components of the courses. Students expecting to receive As were more satisfied with their course …

The Liar As A Comic Figure In Plays By Ruiz De Alarcon, Corneille And Moliere, Robert Matthew Patrick Dec 2006

The Liar As A Comic Figure In Plays By Ruiz De Alarcon, Corneille And Moliere, Robert Matthew Patrick

Doctoral Dissertations

This study on the liar as a comic figure centers on protagonists in five seventeenth-century comic plays: La verdad sospechosa (Ruiz de Alarcon), Melite, Le Menteur (Corneille), Tartuffe and Dom Juan (Moliere). It applies a model combining the concepts of "ironic comedy" (Frye), "the world as stage," metatheater, and theories of laughter. Through this model, supplemented by a comparative-literature approach and additional research, the study attempts to demonstrate that in the plays examined an alazon (impostor) is always punished for his contempt for an ideal of truth that is conceived mainly in secular terms, as well as that in the …

Recuperando A Los Peron: Posmodemidad E Intertextualidad En Dos Obras De Tomas Eloy Martinez, Jose D. Minay Aug 2005

Recuperando A Los Peron: Posmodemidad E Intertextualidad En Dos Obras De Tomas Eloy Martinez, Jose D. Minay

Doctoral Dissertations

Recent history has been the central theme of Argentinean writer Tomas Eloy Martinez. In his two most recognized novels, La novela de Peron (1985) and Santa Evita (1995), he revisits the Peronist period in Argentinean history and attempts to re-write and re-signify traditional accounts of that history while presenting what he hopes is a more balanced interpretation of the Perons and their place in the nation's history.

The present dissertation analyses how Martinez uses numerous postmodern narrative strategies such as metafiction, parody, and intertextuality to carry out his revisionist project in the above-mentioned novels. As a point of departure, the …

'Black Atlantic' Cultural Politics As Reflected In Panamanian Literature, Sonja Stephenson Watson Aug 2005

'Black Atlantic' Cultural Politics As Reflected In Panamanian Literature, Sonja Stephenson Watson

Doctoral Dissertations

The diaspora experience is characterized by hybridity, diversity and above all, difference. The nature of the diaspora experience therefore precludes an exclusive articulation of identity. Black identity in Panama is one characterized by this same multiplicity. My dissertation examines race, culture, and ethnicity in the development of Panamanian national identity and is informed by the critical theories of Paul Gilroy, Stuart Hall, and Frantz Fanon. The articulation of Afro-Panamanian identity is both intriguing and complex because there are two groups of blacks on the Isthmus: Spanish speaking blacks who arrived as a result of slavery (15th -18th centuries) and English …

Wo Liegt Die Grenze? Aspekt, Aktionsart Und Verwandte Phanomene In Der Erforschung Der Deutschen Sprache, Maria Gallmeier Aug 2005

Wo Liegt Die Grenze? Aspekt, Aktionsart Und Verwandte Phanomene In Der Erforschung Der Deutschen Sprache, Maria Gallmeier

Doctoral Dissertations

In 1824, Jacob Grimm first used the terms perfective and imperfective to describe the German verbal system and initiated the discussion of the aspecto-actional meaning in such pairs as jagen : erjagen. Since then, German research has frequently failed to define aspectological terms and categories unambiguously.

This study examines the status of German aspectological research, with special reference to the boundary between the categories Aspekt and Aktionsart. For background, this dissertation successively examines early German aspectological research (1824 to 1930), landmark German grammars, German aspectological research since 1970, cross-linguistic aspectological research in the Slavic and Anglo-American traditions with …

La Teoría De La Poesía En Jorge Cuesta Y José Gorostiza, Raúl Carrillo-Arciniega Dec 2004

La Teoría De La Poesía En Jorge Cuesta Y José Gorostiza, Raúl Carrillo-Arciniega

Doctoral Dissertations

The dissertation titled “La teoría de la poesía en Jorge Cuesta y José Gorostiza” explores, according to what Ernest Curtius has called “Theory of Poetry,” the concept that the poet has had about himself, as well as the activity he executes. This study has reconstructed the history and thoughts of these poets in order to demonstrate how, since the 30’s, these poets have introduced, in their way, a “deconstructive” thought utilizing the phenomenological method to enface the world. This new relation of the subject with the world opposes to a traditional vision in which the world is constructed based on …

Christian Woman, Womanchrist: The Feminization Of Christianity In Constanza De Castilla, Catherine Of Siena, And Teresa De Cartagena, Mary Elizabeth Baldridge May 2004

Christian Woman, Womanchrist: The Feminization Of Christianity In Constanza De Castilla, Catherine Of Siena, And Teresa De Cartagena, Mary Elizabeth Baldridge

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the literary works of Contanza de Castilla, a fifteenth century Spanish nun, in comparison with those of Catherine of Siena, a fourteenth century Italian saint, and Teresa de Cartagena, another fifteenth century Spanish nun. The comparisons were made in order to determine whether similarities among the experiences and spiritualities of these three women led to similarities of gender strategies and/or participation in the feminization of Christianity.

Examination of the works of these three women was based on both the structure in which they wrote (the epistolary format), and the themes that they …

Reflexión Sobre La Realidad Mexicana: Una Mirada Crítica De La Historia A Través De La Dramaturgia Posmoderna De Juan Tovar.” (Reflexion On Mexican Reality: A Critical View Of History Through Postmodern Drama Plays By Juan Tovar), Perla Xochitl Zamitiz Pineda

Doctoral Dissertations

The focus of this dissertation is the analysis of the Mexican History as a literary tool in the production of drama plays by Mexican playwright Juan Tovar, as well as the study of the technique known as Intertextuality. Both, History and intertextuality, are elements that have been identified by critics as a characteristic of literary Postmodernism. This work reveals that History is a part of Latin American literary production and as such, is what makes it different from the European-American Postmodernism and, still, it is a literature that belongs to this contemporary movement.

In order to show that History is …

Feminine Modesty As A Thematic And Structural Principle In Mariana De Carvajal Y Saavedra’S Navidades De Madrid Y Noches Entretenidas, Shane Elizabeth Vande Brake May 2004

Feminine Modesty As A Thematic And Structural Principle In Mariana De Carvajal Y Saavedra’S Navidades De Madrid Y Noches Entretenidas, Shane Elizabeth Vande Brake

Doctoral Dissertations

This study analyzes Mariana de Carvajal y Saavedra's Navidades de Madrid y noches entretenidas as a work that explores issues relating to certain social attitudes of central importance to Spanish women in the seventeenth-century and that advances a specific perspective and point of view in relation to those attitudes. The book is seen as addressing the problem of the nature of feminine modesty and of its character as a virtue. The theme of modesty is analyzed in all the novellas that comprise the Navidades. My first chapter focuses on what is known of Carvajal, aspects of historical background, and …

Byzantium And France: The Twelfth Century Renaissance And The Birth Of The Medieval Romance, Leon Stratikis Dec 1992

Byzantium And France: The Twelfth Century Renaissance And The Birth Of The Medieval Romance, Leon Stratikis

Doctoral Dissertations

This work hopes to fill the need for a complete treatment of the question of possible influence of the Hellenistic and Byzantine romance on the Old French romance of the twelfth century. Adopting a traditional historical approach, along with a consideration of symbols and motifs, it hopes to trace the coherent development of a genre from the Hellenistic world of the beginning of our era to the religious milieu of early Christianity and ultimately to the translation centers of monasteries and ports and the courts of Western Europe at the time of the Crusades. We conclude that, far from composing …
