The Heart Of A Zombie: Dominican Literature's Sentient Undead, Emily A. Maguire

A formerly human being that has been separated from its human consciousness, the has always been marked as more dead than alive. Yet in recent cultural production, another kind of zombie has emerged, what we might call the “sentient undead.” In these recent narratives, the undead protagonist is conscious of his or her inhumanity/non-humanness, along with the marginality of this position, and his or her potential “redemption” or return to humanity is often what drives the plot. Este trabajo estudia el tratamiento del espacio público en las novelas Guanuma (1914), de Federico García Godoy, y La sangre: Una vida bajo la tiranía (1913), de Tulio Manuel Cestero. El ensayo sugiere que en las imágenes captadas por los personajes de ambas novelas durante sus recorridos por las calles de la ciudad las formas generadas por la irrupción de la modernidad se superpone a las de las ruinas del pasado colonial. This essay compares four editions of the book Guía emocional de la ciudad romántica, by the Dominican author and politician Joaquin Balaguer. The book, a celebration of Santo Domingo’s monumental architecture, evokes the topos of the romantic poet who strolls down the streets of an ancient city admiring the remnants of the past. A closer examination, however, reveals a text deeply invested in the monumentalizing of violence—a text that portrays the dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo as the savior of the nation. This essay has two purposes. The first is to analyze the representation of popular music in the Dominican Republic since the mid-nineteenth century to the 1930s. The second is to explore the incorporation and subversion of the notion of merengue as a symbol of "barbarism" in the works of the Dominican writer Ramón Marrero Aristy.

In the year 1930, Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, a military officer of humble origin trained by the United States Marines, took the presidency of the Dominican Republic to begin one of the longest and most brutal dictatorships in the history of Latin America. His rise to power meant the beginning of a massive and continuous effort spanning thirty years to depict General Trujillo as a messianic figure predestined to rescue his nation from a long history of political disarray and economic backwardness. To lead this effort, Trujillo secured the collaboration of the country’s most prominent intellectuals, a group made up of …
