This work is a one volume published by the National Library of Uruguay with a prologue by Dr. George Reid Andrews. It provides an in depth analysis of the corpus of caricatures made by Mario R. Mendez, an afro-Uruguayan artist, for the magazine “Our Race” during its second period 1933-1948. These editorial caricatures made a strong statement against the Fascism in Europe and the League of Nations’ attitude towards the invasion of Ethiopia ordered by Benito Mussolini. La (Des) Pluralización Del Verbo Haber Existencial En El Español Salvadoreño: ¿Un Cambio En Progreso?, Alexander Quintanilla

This study analyzes the pluralization of the verb haber in Salvadoran Spanish. Spanish uses the verb haber ‘to have’ for existential sentences. According to traditional grammars, existential sentences with haber are impersonal, that is, they are conjugated only in the third-person singular. However, it is common in most Spanish varieties to conjugate haber in the plural when the nominal phrase is plural. Recent studies have suggested that the pluralization of haber is an innovation in modern Spanish and that it is advancing from lower to higher classes. In this work I discuss the current situation in the Spanish of El Salvador of the voiceless fricative palatal sound. The presence of this sound in Pipil, an orginal language already spoken in El Salvador before the Spaniards arrived, favored its maintenance in Salvadoran Spanish. Since Pipil is a language in extinction, some authors believe that this sound is also disappearing in Salvadoran Spanish. However, Pipil is not the only language with this sound that influences Salvadoran Spanish. Good Intentions Aren't Enough: Intellectuals And Violence In Luis Goytisolo's Mzungo, Terri Carney

In the 1990s Luis Goytisolo explores the possibilities of popular fiction, adapting various genres (travel, mystery, erotic, historical) to accomodate his long-term project of unpacking Western Values. Indeed, Goytisolo’s flirtation with the best-selling genre fiction constitutes a postmodern gesture of “complicitous critique.”For example, in Escalera hacia el cielo (1999) Goytisolo exploits the erotic genre to challenge the traditional paradigm of the dominant male gaze and the objectified female body and to offer instead expressions of mutuality. In Mzungo (1996), Goytisolo engages the travel novel to undermine the culturally dominant position of the white European male who “discovers” an unknown culture/geography …

El presente trabajo propone proveer un modelo metodológico mixto para el desarrollo e implementación de un Módulo de Enseñanza para el español como lengua extranjera en la modalidad presencial. El objetivo principal es evidenciar cómo los principios metodológicos provenientes de los enfoques didácticos ("enfoque por tareas" y "aprendizaje cooperativo") pueden ser aplicados de manera efectiva en el diseño de contextos presenciales. Este trabajo estudia el tratamiento del espacio público en las novelas Guanuma (1914), de Federico García Godoy, y La sangre: Una vida bajo la tiranía (1913), de Tulio Manuel Cestero. El ensayo sugiere que en las imágenes captadas por los personajes de ambas novelas durante sus recorridos por las calles de la ciudad las formas generadas por la irrupción de la modernidad se superpone a las de las ruinas del pasado colonial. This essay compares four editions of the book Guía emocional de la ciudad romántica, by the Dominican author and politician Joaquin Balaguer. The book, a celebration of Santo Domingo’s monumental architecture, evokes the topos of the romantic poet who strolls down the streets of an ancient city admiring the remnants of the past. A closer examination, however, reveals a text deeply invested in the monumentalizing of violence—a text that portrays the dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo as the savior of the nation. There has been a growing interest in the examination of the steady state of simultaneous bilinguals. An understanding of what leads to the possible weaknesses in the grammar of early bilinguals can contribute to our understanding of the possible causes of the apparent characteristic ‘failures’ in second language acquisition (Montrul 2008). Spanish has a gender feature for nouns (Carroll 1989) and gender agreement for determiners and adjectives. This essay has two purposes. The first is to analyze the representation of popular music in the Dominican Republic since the mid-nineteenth century to the 1930s. The second is to explore the incorporation and subversion of the notion of merengue as a symbol of "barbarism" in the works of the Dominican writer Ramón Marrero Aristy.

In the year 1930, Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, a military officer of humble origin trained by the United States Marines, took the presidency of the Dominican Republic to begin one of the longest and most brutal dictatorships in the history of Latin America. His rise to power meant the beginning of a massive and continuous effort spanning thirty years to depict General Trujillo as a messianic figure predestined to rescue his nation from a long history of political disarray and economic backwardness. Este trabajo2 mostrará que la variabilidad en el desempeño entre los hablantes de una L1 y una L2 no siempre resulta ser un problema debido a un déficit sintáctico (Hawkins y Chan 1997; Hawkins y Liszka 2003; Tsimpli 2003; Hawkins y Franceschina 2004; y otros más) y que la adquisición completa de esta última no depende de los rasgos que están disponibles en la L1. Para tal efecto, me concentraré en la adquisición de los infinitivos y del subjuntivo en español por hablantes de náhuatl.
