The following is a complete set of instructions and materials for a capstone project for a Spanish for Heritage Speakers class. The project consists of conducting a carefully planned interview in Spanish with a family or community member about their immigration story. Students prepare appropriate questions and find background information about the historical, political, economic and cultural conditions in the country of origin of the interviewee. They record the interview and upload it to the StoryCorps Archive platform that is housed by the Library of Congress. In this course students will learn about the musical heritage Africans brought to Brazil and how through forced conversion and cultural adaptation, their traditions quickly syncretized into distinct Afro-Brazilian artistic expressions. This course will explore many musical traditions, including; Samba, Pagode, Baile Funk, Candomblé and Axé music for their social, religious and/or political significance, from the early twentieth century through today. In doing so, students will get to practice and learn the vocabulary and grammatical structures found in the music of these rich and varied genres, and acquire a familiarity with conversational Portuguese.

En este curso haremos lecturas detenidas de ensayos, poemas y cuentos de Jorge Luis Borges y Julio Cortázar. Los estudiantes tendrán la oportunidad de ver una película, varios videos y también podrán escuchar lecturas hechas por los autores mismos. Los estudiantes elegirán uno o dos textos de los autores para hacer un trabajo de investigación. La lectura en voz alta será importante en esta clase; por lo tanto, se espera que los estudiantes graben uno o dos textos de los autores y los hagan públicos para el acervo digital universal.
