This thesis explores The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights John Steinbeck’s adaptation of Thomas Malory’s Le Morte D’Arthur. In this thesis, I argue that Steinbeck’s work is a qualified work of a talented medievalist with sustained close-readings of Acts and Morte along with biographical supplements from Steinbeck’s writings and his biographer Jackson Benson. This thesis seeks to bring light to the qualified, impressive work in Arthurian studies conducted by John Steinbeck over the course of his life that ultimately resulted in the posthumous publication of Acts.

Medieval Spain is a unique summation of religious and cultural communities. Through the built forms of Al-Andalus, there is unique preservation of societal imprints that parallel the formation of the Castilian language. These two mediums—architecture and language—are a telling of the culture and history of the region. By first observing the historical formation of Spanish, and in turn the various communities which inhabited the Iberian Peninsula, one may find many correlations with architecture created at the same time. "Welsh Manipulations of the Matter of Britain" examines the textual relationships between Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia regum Britanniae and the Welsh Brut y Brenhinedd in the Cotton Cleopatra manuscript. This thesis initially provides an overview of the existing scholarship surrounding the Welsh translations of Geoffrey's Historia with a specific focus on the Cotton Cleopatra Brut. The textual examination of the two histories begins with an extended commentary on the general textual variations between the two texts before concentrating on the specific changes that were made in the Cotton Cleopatra to reflect the adapter's pro-Welsh nationalistic and political biases.
