History Faculty Publications and Presentations
In 589, Reccared, king of the Visigoths in Spain, converted from Arian to Catholic Christianity. Arianism was banned, and after a brief period which saw the repression of rebellions, eliminated from the kingdom. All Goths were required to become Catholic. This watershed in Visigothic history both necessitated and facilitated a renegotiation of the parameters of Gothic identity. The entire kingdom was affected: the ruling Visigoths, the small population of recently conquered Sueves, and the Hispano-Romans who were left under the rule of the Goths when the Western Roman Empire fell apart.[1] This Roman population also included some Jews. While …

At variance with the pro-Arab stance that most Latin American intellectuals assumed during the Arab-Israeli Six-Day War (June 5-10, 1967), Jorge Luis Borges’s life-long connection to “lo hebreo,” as he called it, translated into “an immediate taking of sides” with Israel (“Autobiographical Essay” 257). As war erupted between Israel and its Egyptian, Jordanian, and Syrian neighbors, Borges expressed his felt kinship to the Jewish state in the poem “A ISRAEL.” In the war’s aftermath he penned a second poem, “ISRAEL.” Whereas the Jewish motifs that proliferate in Borges’s prose have been well studied, his poetry has received much less critical …

Sam Perl: Mr, Friendship And Mr. Temple Beth-El Of Brownsville, Texas, Harriett Denise Joseph, Sondra Shands
History Faculty Publications and Presentations
This article presents a detailed look at an individual Jew's contributions to Brownsville and the adjacent border area. It illustrates the need for more local studies of a biographical nature to add to our knowledge of Jewish Texans. Research into related topics, such as the role of lay rabbis in maintaining Jewish religious life in other small towns in the Southwest and the degree to which Jewish immigrants entered the mainstream of community life in America, is also needed.
