They Done A Very Bad Act: Rape In The Civil War And Reconstruction, Nora Elizabeth Grace Williams

Student Scholarship

In this project, the interdisciplinary use of sociology, feminist philosophy, and Southern historiography combine to provide a more complete analysis of rape in the Civil War and 3 Reconstruction than previously discussed in other scholarly works. Each discipline provides a valuable piece to the larger picture. This research examines antebellum gender norms, the intersection of race and gender, the impact of slavery on Black women’s sexuality and agency, the weaponization of rape in war, and the impact of Klan violence on Black communities during Reconstruction. Date of photograph is unknown but tintypes flourished in popularity in the 1860s and 1870s and the clothing of the figures suggests a similar time period.

Louisa Catherine Adams was the wife of John Quincy Adams. She was the first lady from 1825-1829, and she was the only first lady to be born outside the U.S. Adams writes this poem to Thomas, stating "your presence eased the lab'ring thought/the note aside was laid/ Before, with kind expression fraught/my compliment was paid." Dated January 25, 1842.

Charles Carroll of Carrollton was a wealthy Maryland planter and an early advocate of independence from Great Britain. He was a continental Congress delegate and a US Senator for Maryland. He was the last signer of the Declaration of Independence to die. This letter was written 3 years before his death at age 95. The Mrs. Harper he writes about it most likely his daughter, the widow of Robert Goodloe Harper.
