Purposefully Forgetting: Surveying San Diego’S Founding Narrative During The City’S Bicentennial Celebrations Of 1969, Noah Pallmeyer
Purposefully Forgetting: Surveying San Diego’S Founding Narrative During The City’S Bicentennial Celebrations Of 1969, Noah Pallmeyer
Keck Undergraduate Humanities Research Fellows
The city of San Diego owes much its success and prosperity to the “victories associated with colonization.” This quote comes directly from the current National Park Service description of the San Diego Presidio. This project turns to the 1969 bicentennial celebrations of San Diego’s founding. This was a rhetorically powerful period in San Diego’s historical remembrance. This project argues that native and other marginalized populations were not properly considered in the narrative of San Diego’s founding during these celebrations. To understand why and how these populations failed to be properly considered, this project turns to the narratives of colonial monuments …

A Partial Presence Is No Presence: Public History Institutions And The Danger Of Social Media, Alex Warren
A Partial Presence Is No Presence: Public History Institutions And The Danger Of Social Media, Alex Warren
Graduate Student Research Symposium
243.6 million people use social media in the United States alone: that is roughly ¾ of the population.[1] This massive audience gives the perception that, especially for smaller public history organizations, it is a simple and effective tool to reach their audiences. But this may not be the case. Although social media provides an opportunity to put forth information to a wide public audience in a way that would otherwise be near impossible for many non-profit organizations, the reality of a successful social media presence provides potentially catastrophic results for an unprepared organization.
Effective social media use requires consideration …

America's Last Great Newspaper War [Table Of Contents], Mike Jaccarino
Cinema & Media Studies
A from-the-trenches view of New York Daily News and New York Post runners and photographers who would stop at nothing to break the story and squash their tabloid arch rivals.
When author Mike Jaccarino was offered a job at the Daily News in 2006, he was asked a single question: “Kid, what are you going to do to help us beat the Post?” That was the year things went sideways at the News, when The New York Post surpassed its nemesis in circulation for the first time in the history of both papers. Tasked with one job—crush the …

The Morphology Of Sex: Tracking Change In The Sex Discourse At Augustana College, Robert E. Burke
The Morphology Of Sex: Tracking Change In The Sex Discourse At Augustana College, Robert E. Burke
Audre Lorde Writing Prize
Here, I track how the criteria for deeming sex as acceptable or unacceptable have changed over time at Augustana College. To do so, I apply two critical lenses to archived issues of the Augustana Observer. The first lens involves Rubin's concept of the "sex hierarchy," a variety of categories by which we may judge sex as good or bad. The second lens is related to Berlant and Warner's "national heterosexuality," a concept that claims that sexual norms are intrinsically elastic but politically, culturally, and economically firm under capitalism. Making use of a localized "snapshot" approach, I use recent Augustana history …
