Son For Everybody: Exploring Afro Cuban And African American Relations Through Langston Hughes’ Translations Of Nicolas Guillén’S Poetry, Hayley R. Fernandez
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis was to analyze the translation decisions made in Cuba Libre, Translated from the Spanish By Langston Hughes and Ben Frederic Carruthers, and to explore the contemporary image of Nicolás Guillén as expressed in recent projects regarding his work and legacy. “El Territorio Como Protagonista”: Un Análisis De Los Recuerdos Territoriales Como Parte De La Memoria Colectiva Del Pueblo Mapuche / “Territory As A Protagonist”: An Analysis Of Territorial Memories That Form Part Of The Collective Memory Of The Pueblo Mapuche, Sabrina Bustamante
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Yoruban people of modern-day Nigeria worship many deities called orichas by means of singing, drumming, and dancing. Their aurally preserved artistic traditions are intrinsically connected to both religious ceremony and everyday life. These forms of worship traveled to the Americas during the colonial era through the brutal transatlantic slave trade and continued to evolve beneath racist societal hierarchies implemented by western European nations. Despite severe oppression, Yoruban slaves in Cuba were able to disguise orichas behind Catholic saints so that they could still actively worship in public. This initial guise led to a synthesis of religious practice, language, and …

Dr. Tom Rivera interviews Connie Cabrera, a retired bilingual teacher in the Colton (California) School District. Connie shares much about her life coming from Jerome, Arizona, and about the years that her mom ran a small grocery store in South Colton. She explains that the store was a meeting place, especially for women of the neighborhood, and how it allowed them a safe space to talk over issues of the day. Connie recounts how she met her husband, Nacho Cabrera, and his journey to opening up his own barber shop. She also explains about …
