The Bureau of Labor Education (BLE) at the University of Maine is a state-funded department of research and advocacy for Maine laborers and their issues. First established in 1966 by the Maine Legislature, the original aim of the Bureau was to foster education about the history and current issues of labor in today's techno-capitalist society, as well as advocate on behalf of labor. The Bureau teaches courses in Labor studies, contributes to and facilitates publications in labor studies and economics, and has retained robust relationships with some of Maine's most important labor allies, like Maine AFL-CIO. Located in northeastern Pennsylvania’s Lackawanna County, Scranton acts as a representation of nineteenth century industrial America. Originally farmland, the area was first inhabited by the Munsee tribe, who were later driven out by conflict between settlers (first arriving in the 1600s), Native Americans, and the English. Eventually, the land would come into ownership by the Scranton brothers, who were able to capitalize on the land’s anthracite and iron deposits to create the city’s first substantial industry. Born in Cervinara, Italy, Dominick DeGregorio came with his brother to the US in 1954. Immediately, he started working in his Uncle’s grocery store in New York City. At 18, DeGregorio started his Union career by joining the Mason Tenders Local #37 in Brooklyn. After transferring his book to Local 6A Concrete Workers Union, he became a power buggy operator transporting concrete to build numerous skyscrapers in the New York City skyline. Scholars active in the Critical Legal Studies movement of the 1980s regularly attacked the scholarship of liberal legalist scholars by using a variety of then contemporary epistemological theories that argued for the impossibility of any observer attaining a neutral position from which to observe social activities. This collection contains 80 nineteenth century trade cards from businesses primarily in Philadelphia (six are from other Pennsylvania location) as well as two decorative images and one three- dimensional square map of Central Europe in German. The cards advertise for a variety of goods and services, including clothing, groceries, beauty and health products, printers, plumbers, jewelers, florists, and more. Many of the cards depict cherubic children, fashionable men and women, prudent consumers using the products advertised, fine art, and include poems, promotions, and manufacturer guarantees. I address how anthropologists can identify the patterns and development of slavery and economic oppression through archaeology and the visualization of Virginia enslavement. I focus on the enslaved people of James Madison's Montpelier. I use 3D modeling as a foundation for integrating enhanced visuals with the goal of presenting a tangible understanding of the enslaved individuals in relation to the artifacts and history of the archaeological sites. This collection consists of the transcripts, original cassette tape recordings of public speeches, lectures, and oral history interviews spanning from 1962-2007. Interviews were conducted and recorded by Georgia Southern University’s Department of History and Zach S. Henderson Library Special Collections. Those interviewed are mostly locals to Bulloch County and neighboring counties. Interviewees discuss their personal and family lives, historical events they were a part of, and circumstances surrounding their successes. The public speeches and lectures originated from an assortment of sources.
