Humanizing The Enslaved Of Fort Monroe’S Arc Of Freedom, William R. Kelly Jr.
Humanizing The Enslaved Of Fort Monroe’S Arc Of Freedom, William R. Kelly Jr.
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
Fort Monroe, located in Hampton, Virginia, was a United States Army post until its deactivation in 2011. President Barack Obama proclaimed Fort Monroe a national monument due to its complex history, including its ties to slavery and emancipation. This paper outlines an ongoing research project designed to identify and humanize both the enslaved who helped build the fort and those who were declared as contraband there during the American Civil War. Housed in the National Archives and Records Administration in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the United States Army Engineer Records from 1819 to 1866 is the main area of focus for this …

Name Fluidity And Its Effect On Ashkenazi Genealogical Research, Meredith Dreyfuss
Senior Theses
It is commonly believed that genealogical research has become easier and more popular than ever before, and with more and more records being digitized and available over the internet, the ability to research family history can be done by anyone with an interest and a computer. Where one might have had to travel to the places that housed the records that trace family life, now many of those records are online, with the data store growing all the time. Similarly, relatively inexpensive DNA testing is bringing family background and history to the masses.
However, while science and technology have revolutionized …

Your Family in History: HIST 550/700
Juan Vadillo was born on December 24, 1987 to Jose Juan Vadillo and Maria Lavastida in a small town on the outskirts of Mexico D.F. named San Jose Huilango. This was an especially difficult labor due to the proximity to the holidays and the relative lack of hospitals and medical professionals. On Christmas Eve Maria went in to labor and had to be rushed to the nearest hospital but was unable to find a reliable mode of transportation. Instead her and her husband, walked to the home of a midwife who lived a few minutes away. At approximately three in …

Interview Of Rosanna Mastrangelo, Rosanna Mastrangelo, Juliana Mastrangelo
Interview Of Rosanna Mastrangelo, Rosanna Mastrangelo, Juliana Mastrangelo
All Oral Histories
The Interviewee:
Rosanna Mastrangelo was born in February 1964, in South Philadelphia. Her parents, along with the rest of her family, were Italian immigrants who had come to America after the end of World War II in hopes of rebuilding a better life for themselves. Raised in a tight-knit Italian neighborhood and surrounded by Old World traditions, Rosanna quickly realized the importance of remaining close to one’s roots, especially in forming her unique sense of identity. But as she went to school and became acquainted with people of other backgrounds and experiences, it became ever more clear that her sense …

Augustana Seniors Fall 1885: Introduction, Dr. Thomas E. Bengtson
Augustana Seniors Fall 1885 (Class of 1886)
The series of papers “Augustana Seniors Fall 1885” represent the work of students in FYI 103 Practical Genealogy, taught by me in the spring term of the 2018–2019 academic year. The course is part of a three-term sequence of First Year Inquiry courses that all first-year students at Augustana take. The students in my class worked in small teams to investigate the family history and genealogy of an Augustana alum. The alums were taken from the members of the senior class as listed in the Augustana College catalog of 1885–1886. The resulting papers were part of the requirements of the …

Leaking Women: A Genealogy Of Gendered And Racialized Flow, Michelle Fine
Leaking Women: A Genealogy Of Gendered And Racialized Flow, Michelle Fine
Publications and Research
Through a feminist and critical race analytic, this paper theorizes the disruptions evoked by leaky women—actually doubly leaky women—those whose nipples, peri-menopausal uterus’ and mouths have “leaked” in ways that rupture/stain/expose the white-patriarchal-capitalist enclosure of work, home and the streets and then dared to leak again by suing for justice in court. In a closing coda, I address the race/class policing dynamics between she who leaks and the “respectable” [usually white] women recruited to plaster up the hole and cauterize the leaker.
