The Bridge
In the western parts of Hvejsel parish in the nineteenth century, the fertile, rolling moraine landscape of eastern Jutland gave way to an immense, sandy plain covered by heath, bog, and streamside meadowland. Settlement was much more scattered on these moors than in the village farmlands of the east. Shepherds sang to the wind and knit their woolen yarn into stockings as flocks grazed on the open heath, and cattle grew fat in the meadows by lonely manor houses.

From Vejle Amt To Iowa In 1868: An Immigrant's Christmas Letter, Christian Poul Christensen
The Bridge
Discontent was rife in nineteenth-century Denmark, to be sure, but why would a prosperous, locally prominent individual like Christian Poul Christiansen choose to take his wife and family and leave their native land forever? Economic necessity did not drive them out into the wide world. "It was asserted that Christiansen brought along from Denmark around $20,000," wrote Rasmus Jurgens in Danske i Amerika in 1908.1 "This family is very wealthy. Through their influence, Randall Station was established, three miles north of Story City, in Hamilton County, [Iowa]. They built a store here and ran a general store, later a lumber …
Pioneer Life In The Big Dane Settlement, August Rasmussen
Pioneer Life In The Big Dane Settlement, August Rasmussen
The Bridge
My experience in pioneer life commenced in 1856, after a long and stormy voyage from Denmark to America in that year. I shall, by the kind assistance of the Independent, give a little of my pioneer life and settlement during forty-five years. My thoughts are running back to the first Christmas I celebrated here in America, in 1856. It was a merry one, as you will see farther on. My wife and I were then both young, about twenty-seven years each.

Chapter Ii: Chicago And The Danish Settlement
The Bridge
If two words characterized Chicago in its first halfcentury, they were "growth" and "change." In 1840 Chicago was a small prairie town of 4,500 inhabitants. But the forces that brought immigrants to the Midwest had already begun to transform Chicago. With the development of trade and commerce between the Midwest and the East, better transportation over land and water became essential. In the 1840s, the State of Illinois constructed the Illinois and Michigan Canal, connecting the Mississippi River with Lake Michigan by way of Chicago. For the first time, Midwestern produce could go to market through the Great Lakes, as …

In our picturesque valley, virtually surrounded by mountains, watered by beautiful streams, filled · with rich soil, and covered by willows, sagebrush, and plentiful grasses, inhabited by beaver and other wild animals, the trapper, the explorer, and the pioneer found the answer to their quest for beauty and the search for an abundant living.
