Community Message About The Passing Of Sharon Barker, Office Of Human Resources

Sharon Barker, a long-time University of Maine employee and tireless advocate for Maine women and girls, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Nov. 20.
Barker became the first director of the UMaine Women’s Resource Center, now called the Intersectional Feminist Resource Center, in 1991. In that role, which she held until her retirement in 2014, Barker mentored countless students, collaborated with faculty and staff and served as a liaison with women’s organizations in the community. Her leadership included developing and facilitating gender equity workshops for girls, offering professional development workshops in gender dynamics for teachers and training UMaine students to serve …

A major scholar of Swiss history and Swiss Americans, his connection with the Swiss-American Historical Society was inseparable, as he helped shaped the Society’s direction.
He served the Society as co-editor of the Review with Heinz K. Meier (1970-1986), as president (1975-1980), as sole editor of the Newsletter/Review (1980-2002), co-editor with H. Dwight Page (2002-2006), as editor of the Society’s book series (1981-2013), and as a member of the editorial board for the book publications.

Dr. Hans Heinrich Kuhn, 97, died on May 11th, 2021, at his home in Summit Hills Spartanburg. Born in 1924 in Niederuzwil, Switzerland, he was the son of the late Werner and Gretel Kuhn and husband of Edith Kuhn Peyer from Zurich, Switzerland. Dr. Kuhn was educated in Switzerland and received his master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland. He received his PhD degree in organic chemistry from the ETH in 1953. After four years of postdoctoral research, he immigrated to the United States in 1957 and was employed by W.R. …

Guides to Manuscript Collections
The bulk of the collection contains newspaper clippings that Mrs. Mathews collected over the years about her former students. There are also a few dozen photographs, along with wedding invitations, school pageants and programs, commencements, handwritten and typed correspondence, reunion correspondence, Greenline newsletters (a publication for Marshall University alumni), church programs, funeral/death announcements and holiday cards. Most of the photos are identified on the back.

T he German Postal system honored the 100th anniversary of Golo Mann's birth in 2009 with a new stamp, which displayed his face with the caption Literarischer Historiker, meaning literary historian. This apt description captures much about the essence of his thinking and work as a historian, as he was a uniquely gifted writer and thus bridged the gap between scholarly historical research and thoughtfully composed literature. The Foundation for the History of the Swiss Abroad has lost its "founding father" and former president. Jean-Rene Bory died peacefully on 28 June 2008 at his home in Coppet (Vaud, Switzerland) after a series of years in which recurrent health problems forced him to substantially reduce his workload.

Robert Henry Billigmeier, who passed away on October 26, 1996 of complications from a stroke, was a distinguished teacher and scholar. Born on January 16, 1917 in McClusky, North Dakota, he moved with his family to Santa Rosa, California in 1933, where he graduated from high school and attended Santa Rosa Junior College. He went on to get a Bachelor's Degree in History from Stanford University in 1938 and a Master's Degree in Sociology from UC Berkeley in 1940.
