What Is A Lesbian Document? Platforming Archival Description, Documents, And History In Sweden, Rachel Pierce

Proceedings from the Document Academy

As Joanna Drucker (2014) convincingly argues, “Most information visualizations are acts of interpretation masquerading as presentation" (p. 10). This article investigates the visuality and built-in argumentations of the Alvin interface for digitized Swedish cultural heritage, focusing on how the platform defines a document and the effects this definition has on the accessibility and interconnectedness of documents related to lesbian and feminist histories. This paper addresses how (failed) systematization and an emphasis on large quantities of documents and metadata breathes new life into outdated historiographies and renders documents and information related to feminist and lesbian histories and connections between these histories …

From Establishment To Final Independence: A Study Of The National Archives Of The United States Of America From 1934–1985, Daniel M. Frett

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis is a study of the National Archives of the United States from the institution’s establishment in 1934 under the presidency of Franklin Roosevelt to becoming the National Archives and Record Administration in 1985. The Archives during the 1930’s and 1940’s functioned as an independent agency, until the Archives lost their independence under the Hoover Commission. In 1949 the Archives became part of the newly formed General Services Administration. During the 1950’s and 1960’s National Archives helped change the archival profession. Furthermore, we see how the two independence movements in the 1960’s and 1980’s that were ultimately successful in …

Substitute Document In Era Of Mamluk Second (Jarkas), Study Investigation And Publishing, Muhammad Mahmoud Al-Anaqra Jul 2018

Substitute Document In Era Of Mamluk Second (Jarkas), Study Investigation And Publishing, Muhammad Mahmoud Al-Anaqra

Journal of the Faculty of Arts (JFA)

There were many ways by which Awqaf was usurped, but the most popular method in the Mamluk era (Jarkas) was having a substitute document. The existence of such a method was proven by the documents and the records of the time. Such a method entailed several procedures which resulted in a number of documents that prove the substitution’s validity and continuity alongside with a fatwa issued by judges and scholars. The importance of this study is that it deals with and decodes a substitute document that was lost in the Mamluk era; it is a long tattered document, but we …

Toward A History Of Documents In Medieval India: The Encounter Of Scholasticism And Regional Law In The Smṛticandrikā, Donald R. Davis Jr. Dec 2016

Toward A History Of Documents In Medieval India: The Encounter Of Scholasticism And Regional Law In The Smṛticandrikā, Donald R. Davis Jr.

The Medieval Globe

In order to understand the legal use and significance of documents in medieval India, we need to start from the contemporaneous legal categories found in the Sanskrit scholastic corpus called dharmaśāstra. By comparing these categories with actual historical documents and inscriptions, we gain better insight into the encounter of pan-Indian legal discourse in Sanskrit and regional laws in vernacular languages. The points of congruence and transgression in this encounter will facilitate a nuanced history of documents and their use beyond unhelpfully broad categories of written and oral. A new translation of one major scholastic discussion of documents is presented as …

Using Documents: A Figurational Approach, Paddy Dolan Jan 2009

Using Documents: A Figurational Approach, Paddy Dolan

Books/Book chapters

Notwithstanding significant changes in the research cultures of many social science disciplines, there remains a certain orthodoxy in the selection of qualitative methods for consumer research in particular. In this field, focus groups and depth (or qualitative) interviews reign supreme, while the use of documentary evidence is sparse. The obvious exception is the growing number of studies written by historians of consumer culture (see for example, Cohen, 2003; De Grazia, 2005; Donohue, 2006). Historians have traditionally used documents as evidence of particular events, values, ideas and practices at specific times and places. These events can then be organised into a …

An Immigrant Story Of Peter Petersen Thisted: Itinerant, Maverik Danish Lutheran Pastor, 1859-1915, Paul A. Thisted Jan 1994

An Immigrant Story Of Peter Petersen Thisted: Itinerant, Maverik Danish Lutheran Pastor, 1859-1915, Paul A. Thisted

The Bridge

This is the story of my Danish grandfather whom I never

knew except through infrequent stories from my father. I

asked my father Aaron to write a family history about his

dad, but he never did. I never found out why he wouldn't. I

wondered about my Thisted grandparents before and after

both my parents died, so I decided to piece the puzzle

together as best I could, while several uncles and aunts were

still alive.

John Rosslott V. Greene And Lawrence Drainage District Mar 1913

John Rosslott V. Greene And Lawrence Drainage District

Farming in Arkansas

John A. Rosslott owned land in Lawrence County that was assessed for taxes in 1912. He disputed the amount assessed and the court issued a decree for the new amount that Rosslott owed to the Drainage District. However, there was an error in the court's decree. In 1913, Rosslott filed this petition for an order of "nunc pro tunc" which is a Latin legal term that means "now for then" and would amend the previous court decree to include an additional tract of land that was missed. The money from these taxes went towards draining the Cache River and surrounding …
