Will The Real J.G. Ballard Please Stand Up?, Scott Richard Stalcup
Will The Real J.G. Ballard Please Stand Up?, Scott Richard Stalcup
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation examines the longer works of British colonial author James Graham Ballard. Specifically, it attempts to answer the long-deflected question posed over the decades to Ballard regarding the treatment of female characters in his fiction. Though espousing liberal feminist ideals at times, Ballard’s repeated use of the lamia/damsel archetype, often in the same female character, strongly suggests he believed otherwise. Using predominantly radical-cultural feminist criticism as a critical lens, specifically the works of Ballard’s long-time nemesis Andrea Dworkin, this study focuses predominantly on the thematic tetralogies of Ballard’s fiction: the ecological disasters of the 1960s, the “techno-barbarism” of the …
Waqf In Transition: Tracing Local Institutional Change During The British Mandate In Palestine, Zachary Murray
Waqf In Transition: Tracing Local Institutional Change During The British Mandate In Palestine, Zachary Murray
Theses and Dissertations
The British Mandate’s actions of state-building in Palestine were informed by a Zionist-Western modernist envisioned past of Palestine. This state-building ideology was embedded within much of the bureaucracy of the Mandate’s system and infringed on numerous Palestinian institutions such as Waqf. Waqf was disenfranchised in particular through the implementation of urban development programs, like town planning and archaeological regimes, which sought to support the British-Zionist recasting of Palestine.
This thesis aims to show how the British’s ideology of Palestine informed the Mandate’s internal polices and actions which infringed on the rights of waqf. This was done through two axes of …

Wretches, Rogues, And Rebels: Smugglers In English Print Culture 1660-1766, Jacob M. Jones
History Dissertations
This dissertation examines smugglers as they appeared in English print culture from their first appearance as "smuckellors" in a 1661 Royal Proclamation to 1766 when Parliament repealed the Revenue Act of 1764 amid protests over the government's crackdown on the vital molasses smuggling trade. Since the nineteenth century, historians have focused on community acceptance of smuggling, arguing that most Britons did not believe smuggling was criminal. However, this dissertation reveals a strong counter-narrative that has not been fully explored. From the nineteenth century onward, smugglers were romanticized and depicted as "honest thieves" and integral parts of coastal British communities. In …

The growing power of Oman’s navy and the establishment of political and commercial alliances between the British and with the rulers of the first Ya'ariba state (1650-1700 AD)
The presence of the British in the Indian Ocean was important since they tried to break the Portuguese hegemony during the beginning of the 16th century and the beginning of the establishment of economic, commercial and political relations with Oman. This study will deal with the role of closeness in striking deals and agreements with the British. All these tactics led to the growth of the Omani naval power. This article also …

The Nana Yaa Asantewaa War: Analysis Of The Political Institutions Of The Asante During The War Of The Golden Stool And The Existing Narratives, Angela Danso Gyane
Senior Independent Study Theses
The War of the Golden Stool was the last in the Anglo-Asante Wars, where the Asante fought against the British colonial agenda. According to the Asante oral history, Nana Yaa Asantewaa was at the forefront of this war. She was the commander, but most of the literature to not reflect this oral history. Therefore, this study seeks to address two essential questions: how did gender dynamics in the Asante Kingdom's political system shape their Resistance against the British in 1900- 01? Moreover, how does the analysis of oral histories from the matrilineal culture of the Asante decenter Western narratives of …

“Sir, We Have The Honour Most Respectfully To Submit Our Humble Petition”: Voices In Ink And The Politics Of Petitions In Colonial Igboland, Nigeria, 1892-1960, Bright Chiazam Alozie
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
With limited access to the traditional sources that historians typically use to document their work, it has become necessary to find new ways to explore the voices of local peoples who have been historically “denied a voice.” One way is through the study of petitions. Indeed, scholars of history have sparingly used petitions in some way while few have made systematic use of them. Even so, historians of colonial Africa have largely overlooked petitions in their studies, despite the important role that these sources played in negotiating African-European relations. This dissertation revolves around the hundreds of selected petitions, dubbed “voices …

"To Have And Enjoy": Seating In Boston's Early Anglican Churches, 1686-1732, Erica Jill Mcavoy
Graduate Masters Theses
In 1686, Massachusetts Bay Colony lost its charter, and the British government exerted more control over Massachusetts, further enveloping the colony into the folds of the Empire. In the same year, the first Anglican church, King’s Chapel, was established in Massachusetts. With these changes, Boston became more involved in Atlantic trade. During the first quarter of the eighteenth century, the people of Boston began to embrace a more English identity that became evident in the products they were buying, the way they were dressing, and how they worshipped. Just as strict Puritan worship rules waned, new, more English-style methods flourished. …
A People So Different From Themselves: British Attitudes Towards India And The Power Dynamics Of The East India Company, Eric Gray
Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal
Today, many characteristics of the nineteenth- and twentieth-century British Raj are well ingrained in the public consciousness, particularly Victorian Era Britons’ general disdain for numerous aspects of the many cultures found on the Indian Subcontinent. Moreover, while many characteristics of the preceding East India Company’s rule in India were no less exploitative of Indian peoples, evidence shows a much different relationship between British and Indian cultures during the East India Company’s hegemony over India than those of the later Raj. Prior to the nineteenth century, many Britons, both those who traveled to India and those who did not, appeared to …

Politics And Religion During The Rise And Reign Of Anne Boleyn, Megan E. Scherrer
Politics And Religion During The Rise And Reign Of Anne Boleyn, Megan E. Scherrer
LSU Master's Theses
During the 1520s and 1530s England endured a tumultuous time of drastic political change and religious reform. At the heart of it all was Anne Boleyn, whose relationship with King Henry VIII launched the English Reformation and the Royal Supremacy, and whose tragic end became a story passed down through the current day. This work examines Anne’s life, particularly her religion and influence in politics, and the figures who shone and dimmed as she came to power and once she lost everything. Some of the most significant of these figures include Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, Sir Thomas More, Thomas Cromwell, Hugh …
“...Members Of One And The Same Mystical Body…” Development Of A British Protestant Identity During The Thirty Years War, Shira Cohen
Honors Papers
The political situation of the British Isles changed from a uniting monarchy to a military-run, vaguely representative government over the course of a very short time during the 17th century. The Scottish and English populace overthrew their monarch for a majority of reasons, including economic and political ones, many of which have been studied extensively. This thesis addresses the less-emphasized religious reasonings that allowed for such a disruptive event supported by so many people, which can trace their roots to the Thirty Years War that began a few decades before these overarching changes in British society.
This thesis will investigate …

Shadows Of Empire: The Mughal And British Colonial Heritage Of Lahore, Naeem U. Din
Shadows Of Empire: The Mughal And British Colonial Heritage Of Lahore, Naeem U. Din
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The Pakistani city of Lahore is the capital of the Punjab province. The city itself has existed for over a thousand years. In 1947 the British rule in the Indian subcontinent ended, resulting in the partition of British India into the modern states of India and Pakistan. At the time the Punjab province was also partitioned, with the western half (including Lahore) going to Pakistan and the eastern half being awarded to India. Prior to partition, Lahore served as an important administrative and commercial center under the Mughal Empire (1526–1799), the Sikh Empire (1799–1849), the British East India Company (1849–1858), …

William Morris became an artistic revolutionary, reacting against the academic views of art held in the Victorian Era and the Industrial Revolution. This thesis will deal with his reaction against the expectations of his family and the events of his childhood, showing their effect upon his future role as a revolutionary. This thesis will then cover his response against the Royal Academy’s academic art, the Industrial Revolution, and how his art ideologies clashed against the common norm of his time. Finally, this thesis will look at how each of his reactions led to his influential role in the Arts and …

British Appeasement 1936-1939: The Debate Between Parliament And The Public, Kylie D. Johnson
British Appeasement 1936-1939: The Debate Between Parliament And The Public, Kylie D. Johnson
Calvert Undergraduate Research Awards
While it is now clear that appeasement of Nazi Germany and Adolf Hitler did not prevent another war, there is a historical debate on whether British appeasement policies were shameful, a set of well-intentioned blunders, an attempt at keeping peace internationally, or a strategy to keep domestic resources focused on Britain. Within the debate between historians, lies a debate between the British public and Parliament, and even within Parliament itself. An important factor in the British decision to implement appeasement policy in the 1930s often underemphasized in the literature is the governmental prioritizing of domestic issues and national security over …
Winning At The Graduate Level Of Warfare: Six Core Factors Of A Successful Counterinsurgency Campaign And The Example Of Sierra Leone, John D. Rimann
Winning At The Graduate Level Of Warfare: Six Core Factors Of A Successful Counterinsurgency Campaign And The Example Of Sierra Leone, John D. Rimann
Honors Theses
The most common form of warfare so far in the 21st Century has been insurgencies and counterinsurgencies, types of warfare which are particularly challenging for industrialized Western nations to wage effectively. This paper identifies six factors of primary importance which form the key to a successful counterinsurgency campaign. These factors are legitimacy, clarity, beneficial geopolitical factors, restraint, intellectual understanding, and an enduring commitment. This paper argues that these factors must all be present for a counterinsurgency campaign to succeed, and argues that without these factors being accounted for a counterinsurgency will fail. The British humanitarian intervention in Sierra Leone in …

The Non-Identical Anglophone Bildungsroman: From The Categorical To The De-Centering Literary Subject In The Black Atlantic, Jarad Heath Fennell
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
My goal with this dissertation was to discover more about how the Bildungsroman genre in English or the coming-of-age story became a staple of post-colonial and ethnic minority writing. I grew up reading novels like these and feel a great deal of affection for them, and I wanted to understand how authors writing in these other traditions represented a broader response to colonialist Western culture. My method was to survey philosophical approaches to subjectivity and subject-formation, read a wide variety of texts I understood as engaging with the Bildung tradition, and examining how they represented subject-formation.
While I originally saw …
Constructing A Narrative Of Irish Republicanism 1913 - 1921, Christopher Graff
Constructing A Narrative Of Irish Republicanism 1913 - 1921, Christopher Graff
Honors Theses
The Easter Rising of 1916 and subsequent Anglo-Irish War were two seminal events in contemporary Irish history, and are especially pertinent as the 100th anniversary of the Rising approaches this year. In this thesis, I examine the underlying causes of the Easter Rising, specifically the growing influence of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and an increase in Irish Nationalism. I then trace the planning, preparation, and execution of the Easter Rising, which was not a popular uprising, but rather an armed insurrection led by a small group of militarized radicals. I also analyze the political, social, and economic consequences of the …
Religion And Conflict: The Case Of Northern Ireland, Padraig O'Malley
Religion And Conflict: The Case Of Northern Ireland, Padraig O'Malley
Padraig O'Malley
Now that the peace process, however fragile and tenuous, has stayed the course, despite some serious obstacles and setbacks, and talks between the British government and Sinn Fein are taking place, it is a time to reflect on the nature of the divisions that have scarred our lives and psyches. One of the most under-researched and least understood aspects of the conflict is the role religious differences play - or do not play. 1 While it is a common practice to label the two communities as "Catholics" and "Protestants," and to keep the tally-roll of the dead according to religious …

Striving For Salvation : Margaret Anna Cusack, Sainthood, Religious Foundations And Revolution In Ireland, 1829-1899, Sean Heather K. Mcgraw
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Margaret Anna Cusack, later Sister Mary Frances Clare, and also known as Mother Clare, (6 May 1829 - 5 June 1899) was an Anglo-Irish Protestant who became a Catholic Nun and the foundress of a still existent Catholic religious order, the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace. She was also a vociferous champion for the poor, for Irish political rights, for Irish nationalism, and was the first Irish nationalist woman historian and a prolific writer who wrote more than one hundred works. She was a radical, a revolutionary, a champion and hero, a source of conflict and …
British Army Women In The Seven Years' War, Celena M. Meloche
British Army Women In The Seven Years' War, Celena M. Meloche
The Great Lakes Journal of Undergraduate History
During the Seven Years' War, many soldiers' wives and female camp followers contributed to the British war effort in numerous ways and did so in the face of great oppression. Using the themes of labour, conditions and dangers, sexual and domestic life, illicit activities, and discipline and punishment, this essay will demonstrate that both the presence and labour of women within the army were essential to British success because without women the army would have been strained to recruit, maintain, and care for its soldiers. It will also show that, to contribute to the war effort, army women were expected …
The Gendering Of Space In Colonial Burma : Race, Sex, And Power On The Road To Mandalay 1888-1948, Michael Zaborowski
The Gendering Of Space In Colonial Burma : Race, Sex, And Power On The Road To Mandalay 1888-1948, Michael Zaborowski
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This thesis contends that British colonials reproduced Victorian ideas about separate roles and spaces for the genders in Burma during the period of British rule from 1888 to 1948. This reproduction affected and was affected by issues of race, sex, power, and identity in the ruling British class and the subject Burmese population.

The Fearful State Of England: The Amalgamation Of Fin-De-Siècle Anxieties And Anarchist Outrages In The Public Deconstruction Of The Liberal State, 1892-1911, David R. Speicher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation analyzes a series of Anarchist crimes, occurring in England from 1892-1911, and concentrates on the public dialogue that emerged in the popular press as a result of these crimes. British newspapers and periodicals published extensively on the crimes, and the crimes became a way for the British public to discuss wide-ranging topics, such as liberalism, labor, immigration, poverty and national degeneration. Many Britons believed that these crimes had revealed an Anarchist danger hidden within England, and, as a result, many Englanders perceived Britain's social and political customs to be outdated and unsafe. These crimes occurred at a time …

The Crime Of Coming Home: British Convicts Returning From Transportation In London, 1720-1780, Christopher Teixeira
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines convicts who were tried for the crime of 'returning from transportation' at London's Old Bailey courthouse between 1720 and 1780. While there is plenty of historical scholarship on the tens of thousands of people who endured penal transportation to the American colonies, relatively little attention has been paid to convicts who migrated illegally back to Britain or those who avoided banishment altogether. By examining these convicts, we can gain a better understanding of how transportation worked, how convicts managed to return to Britain, and most importantly, what happened to them there. This thesis argues that convicts resisted …

The Battle Of Hampden And Its Aftermath, Robert Fraser
Maine History
The successful British attack on the Penobscot Valley in fall 1814 was to annex eastern Maine to Canada, a move taken to protect the important line of communications between Halifax and Quebec. New England merchants had opposed the War of 1812, as it destroyed their international trade, and most New Englanders tried to remain neutral during the fray. At Hampden, enemy threats brought them out to defend their homes. Although Great Britain returned the area to the United States at war’s end, the occupation of the Penobscot Valley had lasting implications for the District of Maine. Between 1954 and 1984 …
