Critical Edition Of The Summe Of Christian Religion Delivered By Zacharias Ursinua, Taylor Trenta
Critical Edition Of The Summe Of Christian Religion Delivered By Zacharias Ursinua, Taylor Trenta
University Honors Papers
Originally delivered by Zacharius Ursinus along with his work on the Heidelberg Catechism, The Summe of Christian Religion is an expansion on his contributions to the literature of Christian faith. The version, translated to English by Henry Parry, contributes to the depth of this reformed way of thinking across sixteenth to seventeenth century Western Europe; presented in the form of questions and explanations, this type of religious text is important for expanding on theological thoughts.
Care And Pregnancy Loss, Chelsea Phillips
Care And Pregnancy Loss, Chelsea Phillips
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640-1830
In the wake of the Dobbs decision, new legislation across the U.S. has created ambiguity around the access to and legality of interventions for pregnancy loss in certain states. This essay situates our current legal landscape in opposition to that of the eighteenth-century, where care and preservation of the pregnant person were a guiding priority.
Abortion In The Fiction Of Laclos, Rousseau, Isabelle De Charrière, Montesquieu, Servanne Woodward
Abortion In The Fiction Of Laclos, Rousseau, Isabelle De Charrière, Montesquieu, Servanne Woodward
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640-1830
Eighteenth-century French fiction containing episodes on abortion are influenced by the seventeenth-century scandal of La Voisin, and by the 1731 legal suit involving the Jesuit Priest Père Girard and Catherine Cadière. Two observations may be derived from eighteenth-century French novels: women's abortions are monitored, instigated, and decided by fathers, husbands and lovers, who select for them, if they are to remain celibate, and whose children they bear. And as well, abortion tests or reveals the limits of a woman’s individual freedom and right to care for herself.
The Quick And The Dead (And The Transported), Manushag N. Powell
The Quick And The Dead (And The Transported), Manushag N. Powell
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640-1830
In most nations that still execute prisoners—including the U.S.—it is illegal to execute a pregnant person. In English common law, women have been permitted to “plead the belly” in one form or another since the 14th century, and this fact is sometimes misconstrued by anti-choice and forced-birth advocates as evidence of a long legal tradition of protection for the lives of fetuses. In fact, it is merely evidence of a long history of legal inconsistencies in the ways laws were applied and sentences carried out against women, for whom there were fewer options for clemency than for men. This …

Introduction: Conversations On Abortion Rights And Bodily Autonomy In The Eighteenth Century And Today, Vicki Barnett Woods, Manushag N. Powell
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640-1830
This piece serves as an introduction to the discussions of bodily autonomy and reproductive rights, revised from roundtable presentations held at ASECS 2023. This collection of essays contributes to the resounding responses of frustration and anger toward the overturning of Roe v. Wade. The collection was written and presented by eighteenth-century scholars who have a comprehensive knowledge of the eighteenth-century legal, social, and medical histories that center around reproductive rights and bodily autonomy.

Pop And Indie: What Do They Mean And Why Does It Matter? Genre And Marketing From Within The Uk Music Scene, Maggie Malin
Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works
This paper aims to explore the evolution of “pop” and “indie” as words and as genres from within the London music scene, and to suggest the most appropriate or effective marketing techniques based on a standard understanding of each genre and its implications. For each of these genres, I establish two definitions: a semantic definition, based on the etymology of the word and the cultural implications of the genre’s origins and history, and a sonic definition, based on any overarching standards of how the genre’s music sounds. In defining each genre’s sound, its history and evolution are considered, as well …

La Fiesta Del Espiritu Santo: An Original Work For Choir, Soloists, And Small Ensemble Influenced By The Santeria Music Of The African-Dominican Community In The Dominican Republic, Rafael Scarfullery
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
This study examines the role of Santería music as practiced by African Dominicans in Villa Mella, a neighborhood of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. This musical tradition comes from the culture and religion of the Yoruba people who were brought as slaves from Africa, and features complex drum rhythms and call-and-response chants. This paper deals with the historical and social context of Santería music within the Dominican Republic, but its principal objective is to adopt the musical language of this tradition and use it to create a new contemporary work for mixed choir and small ensemble.

Afrofantastic Presents: The Many Deaths Of Oscar Mack, Julian Chambliss
Third Stone
Oscar Mack's story deserves the dedication that has culminated in the creation of this defining documentary. Mack's struggle to survive is ripe for the Afrofuturist re‐telling, not because it is fantastic but because the comic story has the potential to capture the transformative thinking black people must employ to survive.

“Every Nation Except Our Own”: The Social Gospel, Anti-Immigrant Sentiments, And U.S. Foreign Policy, Andrea Darmawan
Student Research Submissions
This thesis concerns the social gospel, a liberal Protestant movement that enjoyed its heyday in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The thesis argues that the movement’s two most prominent figures, Washington Gladden and Walter Rauschenbusch, expressed an antipathy toward immigrants and a paternalistic attitude toward foreign nations and cultures. These attitudes then laid the foundation for contemporary anti-immigrant sentiments and US foreign policy. Gladden and Rauschenbusch’s rhetoric contains sentiments which act as a precursor to various elements of American exceptionalism, from missionary activity abroad to liberal attitudes toward the Middle East after 9/11. "Innumerable Small Crafts": Maritime Work In The Estuarian Gulf, 1865-1900, Kevin Grubbs
Dissertations
Maritime historians have argued for a highpoint in maritime activity during the antebellum years. This peak was fed by Americans travelling on tall wooden sailing ships in international trade, in the whaling industries, and as members of the US Navy. The prowess of the American Merchant Marine faded quickly in the middle of the nineteenth century due to military losses during the American Civil War and due to the rise of steamships and steel hulls. This peak was followed by another lesser peak in the Twentieth Century as American ships caught up with technological changes. World War One provided a …

The History And Impact Of Education In Virginia During The Civil War Era, Christopher L. Jones
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The following dissertation is a study of the educational history of Virginia during the Civil War era, the resulting struggles that ensued, and how these challenges led to a new period of change and reform throughout the Commonwealth. Numerous issues such as academic quality control, enrollment factors, staff shortages, economic turmoil, the dangers that some school grounds faced, race relations, and the aftermath of reform that presented new educational norms to Virginia are explored. This manuscript examines circumstances in Virginia’s educational system during the decade before the war and then discuss the drastic changes that occurred when the war began …

Lying-In Transition: The Modernization And Professionalization Of Childbirth In Rural Alabama 1870-1910, Jennifer Megan Gmuca
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This dissertation will analyze the underlying reasons childbirth became professionalized, which was due to the growing demands by women for safer birthing conditions. The demand evolved out of the complex relationship among social status, race and ethnicity, and regional locations, all made possible by the modernization and professionalization of tocology that became available during the latter part of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth-century. The history of childbirth is a critical topic because, as previously mentioned, the maternal mortality rate in the United States in the twenty-first-century is still incredibly high for a developed nation. Women deserve safer birthing …

The Road To Armageddon: American Culture And Politics During The Late Cold War, 1970-1991, David Lee Denham Iii
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Bible prophecy has long engaged the American mind. By the late Cold War, Biblical prophecy increasingly shaped the political beliefs of millions of Americans within the evangelical community. The group most impacted were dispensationalist Christians who interpreted the Atomic Age through the lens of end-time prophecies. Dating as far back as the seventeenth-century, American colonists living on the frontier of the British empire in North America embraced millennialism and, at times, interpreted current events through the lens of Bible prophecy while anticipating the Second Coming of Jesus Christ and the Battle of Armageddon. Through the centuries, Bible prophecy became a …
Thomas Jefferson: Slavery, Education, And The Public Mind, Brendan Lenahan
Thomas Jefferson: Slavery, Education, And The Public Mind, Brendan Lenahan
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Thomas Jefferson’s autobiography reveals his continual struggle against slavery and his frustration at the resistance of the “public mind” in Virginia, predominantly composed of slave-owning aristocrats. Despite vocal condemnations of slavery, attempts to translate his anti-slavery stance into formal documents faced significant resistance from the society he aimed to change. Even within the House of Burgess, Jefferson's support for a bill allowing individual slave owners to free their slaves was met with contempt. His draft of the Declaration of Independence, condemning the King for slavery, was revised by delegates, impeded by both northern financiers of the slave trade and southern …
