A Survey Of Diplomatic And Commercial Relations Between The United States And Oman In Zanzibar, 1828-1856, Mohammed Al-Mukadam

Dissertations and Theses

Informal relations between American merchant traders and the Sultanate of Oman in the port of Zanzibar began with the landing of the first American merchants about 1828. At the same approximate time, Sultan Said bin Sultan moved his official residence from Muscat, Oman, to Zanzibar, underlining the importance of Zanzibar to the administration of his territories on the East African coast. Relations were formalized by the Treaty of 1833 between the United States and Oman, and the U.S. established a consular mission in Zanzibar in 1837 and in Muscat in 1838.

The growth of the Omani Empire under Sultan Said …

Oregon's Cuban-American Community : From Revolution To Assimilation, Richard Dellenback Jan 1990

Oregon's Cuban-American Community : From Revolution To Assimilation, Richard Dellenback

Dissertations and Theses

The adjustment and assimilation achieved by Cuban-Americans who arrived in Oregon during the 1960s was notable for its rapidity. Little contact existed between the state and the island prior to the resettlement efforts begun by the Charities Division of the Portland Catholic Archdiocese, where a group of concerned administrators meshed their activities with a nation-wide program created and encouraged by the united States government and private agencies.

Belonging To The Army: Camp Followers And The Military Community During The American Revolution, Holly A. Mayer

The Continental Army was the cause and the core of a military community made up of both army personnel and camp followers, who together and separately affected the military mission. The dissertation focuses primarily on the civilian, as opposed to the military, members of the "Continental Community." Fitting within the broad context of social history, it is also a part of the new military history.;Books and articles on armies have typically dealt with the military structure, the campaigns and battles, and the exploits of uniformed heroes or traitors. Those accounts provide merely the background here. In this dissertation, the military …

Across The First Divide: Frontiers Of Settlement And Culture In Augusta County, Virginia, 1738-1770, Nathaniel Turk Mccleskey

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This is a history of a frontier county in late colonial Virginia. Augusta County was created in 1738 and subdivided for the first time in 1770. During the intervening years it encompassed most of Virginia's claims to land west of the Blue Ridge Mountains.;As drawn by Virginians, the borders of Augusta County simultaneously encompassed two types of frontiers: a frontier of settlement on which white immigrants created a new society, and a frontier of culture in which those settlers interacted with a variety of Indians. This study examines both types of frontier experiences.;On the settlement frontier, white immigrants rapidly created …

On The Marchlands Of Empire: Trade, Diplomacy, And War On The Southeastern Frontier, 1733-1763, Michael James Foret Jan 1990

On The Marchlands Of Empire: Trade, Diplomacy, And War On The Southeastern Frontier, 1733-1763, Michael James Foret

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Southeastern North America was the scene of international, intercultural, and interethnic frontiers during the first two-thirds of the eighteenth century. Europeans and Indians existed there in greater relative concentrations than anywhere else in North America, and each European colony and Indian nation constituted a different locus of trade, diplomacy, and war. Because of the relatively high population density and national and ethnic complexity of the region, commercial, diplomatic, and military relations there exhibited a different character than in earlier-colonized regions from Virginia northward and in the Caribbean.;The southeastern Indians existed in a state of dependency in the eighteenth century which …

The English Evangelical Revival Of The Eighteenth Century, Aaron T. Bicknese Jan 1990

The English Evangelical Revival Of The Eighteenth Century, Aaron T. Bicknese

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

The philosophy of deism cannot be ignored for taking a considerable toll on preaching. Great efforts had been made to make Christianity "reasonable," and in the process, revelation was rejected as a possibility for the origin of the Christian faith. Deists discounted beliefs such as Christ's being God incarnate, claiming that such beliefs were added over the years by superstitious clergy. As John Harrison remarks, the Church of England did "virtually nothing" to stem the spread of the deistic philosophy. Rather, many churchmen became deeply influenced by it.

The Federal Government And The Industrial Workers Of The World, 1917-1918: An Attempt To Crush A Labor Union, Michael Torrance Prahl Jan 1990

The Federal Government And The Industrial Workers Of The World, 1917-1918: An Attempt To Crush A Labor Union, Michael Torrance Prahl

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) was founded in 1905 as an industrial union: an organization of working people based on where they worked rather than the type of work they performed. From the beginning, the IWW was militant in its rhetoric. The preamble to its constitution declared: "The working class and the employing class have nothing in common." The IWW also advocated direct action (e.g., strikes and sabotage) as the means by which to accomplish their goal of a complete take-over of the means of production by the working class. Both its rhetoric and its actions created a …

Nietzsche's "Woman" : A Metaphor Without Brakes, Kathleen Merrow Jan 1990

Nietzsche's "Woman" : A Metaphor Without Brakes, Kathleen Merrow

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis reconsiders the generally held view that Friedrich Nietzsche's works are misogynist. In doing so it provides an interpretation of Nietzsche's texts with respect to the metaphor "woman," sets this interpretation into an historical context of Nietzsche reception and follows the extension of Nietzsche's metaphor "woman" into French feminist theory. It provides an interpretation that shows that a misogynist reading of Nietzsche is in error because such a reading fails to consider the multiple perspectives that operate in Nietzsche's texts.

The Winds Of War And Change: The Impact Of The Tuscarora War On Proprietary North Carolina, 1690-1729, Christine Ann Styrna Jan 1990

The Winds Of War And Change: The Impact Of The Tuscarora War On Proprietary North Carolina, 1690-1729, Christine Ann Styrna

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The Tuscarora War marked a major turning point in the development of proprietary North Carolina. Beginning in 1711 and continuing for two years, the war rendered the central coastal plains a virtual wasteland and plunged the colony into an economic recession. Only the arrival of South Carolina troops in 1712 and 1713 saved North Carolina from complete destruction.;While the defeat of the Tuscaroras marked the end of their dominance along the North Carolina coastal plains, the war also served as a major catalyst behind political, economic, and demographic developments in the colony. During the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, proprietary …

A Community Study Of Coalville, Utah, 1859-1914, Norma Eileen Pyper Thompson

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is about a small Mormon community, Coalville, Utah, during the time period 1859 to 1914. Coalville is located in the northeastern section of the state of Utah in Summit County on Interstate 80.
Although Coalville remained small in population, it is worthwhile to study its origins, the people who built its institutions, its social life and economy and how it developed from a mere camping spot on the road between Salt Lake to Wyoming into a stable community. Coalville's development was significant to the growth and culture of Utah.
The founders experienced the usual pioneer struggles to conquer …

The Development Of The Smelting Industry In The Central Salt Lake Valley Communities Of Midvale, Murray, And Sandy Prior To 1900, Charles E. Hughes

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis found that the three communities of Midvale, Murray, and Sandy were the center of the smelting industry in the Salt Lake Valley. These communities became the center of smelting because of their central location, the readily available water supply, and the availability of an inexpensive, efficient transportation system to ship the bullion. The smelters were surrounded by two major mountain ranges which provided a ready supply of good lead, silver, and copper ore.

The development of the smelting industry followed three separate phases or periods. The first phase was one of experimentation or period of discovery, in which …
