Southern Baptist Missions In China 1945-1951, Garnett Lee White Jan 1967

Southern Baptist Missions In China 1945-1951, Garnett Lee White

Master's Theses

This thesis developed from a seminar paper on the South China Mission of the Southern Baptist Convention, 1945-1951, prepared for Dr. R. Barry Westin in the tall of 1965. Though the scope of this present study includes Southern Baptist Missions in all of China during the same period, its purpose remains the same. That purpose is to present the course of the evangelical outreach or this large Protestant denomination, and the progress made in establishing an indigenous Christian movement in China before the Communists forced the withdrawal of all missionary personnel.

The Truman Victory Of 1948, David Edwin Wallace Jan 1967

The Truman Victory Of 1948, David Edwin Wallace

OBU Graduate Theses

The results of the Presidential election of 1948 produced one of the most stunning upsets in the history of elections in the United States. The odds against Harry S. Truman's winning re- election were considerable. As President, he was following one of the outstanding politicians in American history, Franklin Delano Roosevelt .

In April of 1948, disaffected New Dealers and many city political bosses, feeling that Truman could not win the election, attempted to convince first General Dwight D. Eisenhower and then Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas to run for President on the Democratic ticket. Up until the time …

The Foreign Policy Of Harry S. Truman, Patricia Reagan Slater Jan 1967

The Foreign Policy Of Harry S. Truman, Patricia Reagan Slater

Graduate Thesis Collection

Without knowing it, a professor of mine, Dr. Emma Lou Thornbrough, stimulated my interest in President Truman when she stated in a freshman history course that Harry S. Truman would go down in history as one of the greatest American Presidents if not the greatest because of his ingenuity in foreign policy. The exact purporse of this paper is to examine these programs.

Revolutionary Development In The Republic Of Viet Nam, James N. Davis Jan 1967

Revolutionary Development In The Republic Of Viet Nam, James N. Davis

Honors Theses

The scope of this study is three-fold. It attempts mainly to explore United States involvement in the Republic of Viet Nam from the perspectives of the history, the aims and the effectiveness of the pacification program.

The rationale for the use of such a method as pacification in the rural areas of the Viet Name may be traced back at least as far as the beginning of Western colonial interests there. Saigon submitted to colonial rule by France in 1885.

The Oratorio: Paradox In Music, Carolyn Yeldell Jan 1967

The Oratorio: Paradox In Music, Carolyn Yeldell

Honors Theses

Without a doubt, the most ambiguous and obscure of the larger musical forms is the oratorio. It is extremely difficult to define because it has taken so many meanings at different times and in different countries. One may explain or describe it as a dramatic poem, usually of religious or contemplative character (but not liturgical), to be performed throughout by solo voices, chorus, and orchestra in a concert hall or church without the assistance of scenery, costumes, or action. This description, however, does not cover every example of oratorical literature; exceptions are already evident, even with the works by composers …

A Study Of The Executive Board Of The Arkansas Baptist State Convention 1900-1965, Carl Wesley Kluck Sr. Jan 1967

A Study Of The Executive Board Of The Arkansas Baptist State Convention 1900-1965, Carl Wesley Kluck Sr.

OBU Graduate Theses

In this study an analysis had been made of the Executive Board of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention. The investigation was limited to eight specific problems. The problems discussed are: (1) composition of the Board, (2) requisites for membership on the Board, (3) women on the Board, (4) personnel of the Board, (5) organization of the Board, (6) meetings of the Board, (7) duties of the Board, and (8) report of the Board.

In the examination of these problems an attempt was made to discover and to present relevant factual information derived from available primary sources.

Due to the nature …

The United States And African Nationalism In British East Africa Since 1945, Clarence A. Allison Jan 1967

The United States And African Nationalism In British East Africa Since 1945, Clarence A. Allison

OBU Graduate Theses

World War II brought about a realignment of the power structure among the nations of the world. The primary conflict of interest developed between Russian and the Western nations, with the United States predominant among them.

Through the leverage afforded by the East-West conflict, African nations were able to exert enough force to dislodge the colonial powers which had ruled them for nearly a century.

Early efforts to unite the African people were carried out in the United States and other Western nations, with American Negroes leading the drive. Among these men were W.E.B. DuBois and Marcus Garvey.

The United …

Slavery In Colonial Massachusetts, Thomas A. Malloy Iii Jan 1967

Slavery In Colonial Massachusetts, Thomas A. Malloy Iii

Masters Theses

1. Introduction

The purpose of this paper is to trace the history of slavery in colonial Massachusetts. Massachusetts was by no means an originator of this institution, for the practice of slavery predates written history. Its origins probably stem from wars of conquest in which captives were used for sacrificial purposes, but as prehistoric man adopted a settled way of life, he found it practical to spare his captives' lives and enslave them. The conqueror's justification for enslavement of his captives was that he had spared their lives, and thus they were at his disposal. In a sense, one could …

The History Of Nursing In Arkansas, Martha Annette Johnson Jan 1967

The History Of Nursing In Arkansas, Martha Annette Johnson

Honors Theses

This paper tells very briefly the history of nursing in Arkansas. Because a thorough investigation of the history of nursing would require a longer period of time, I have chosen the most striking events pertaining to the subject.

The information in this paper was taken from unpublished manuscripts, mostly minutes from meetings of various organizations, in the possession of Miss Linnie Beauchamp, R.N., who is currently compiling the information for a book. I am greatly indebted to her for the time and help she has given to me.

A Survey Of American Songs Of Peace From The Colonial Era To The Present, Walter Clippinger Simmons Jan 1967

A Survey Of American Songs Of Peace From The Colonial Era To The Present, Walter Clippinger Simmons

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will attempt to trace the evolution and historical development of American anti-war and peace songs. Researching the study has been an adventure into an unknown aspect of American history. No published account of a similar or related study was discovered. The Library of Congress has no catalogue classification for pacifist songs. The Swarthmore College Peace Collection contains perhaps the only specific collection of peace songs in the country. Nevertheless, this study can draw upon a collection of over two hundred songs gathered from public and university libraries and interested individuals across the country.

United States Opinion From Munich To The Blitzkreig, Barbara Evans Jan 1967

United States Opinion From Munich To The Blitzkreig, Barbara Evans

Honors Theses

In the late nineteen-thirties "isolationism" determined American attitudes toward Europe. Basically, the term, used to describe that period, refers to the beliefs which decreed that the United States should have no part in foreign quarrels.

This paper will attempt to analyze the feelings of the majority of Americans. Many men counseled non-involvement for many reasons, and extremists ranged from the Catholic priest, Father Coughlin, a man with definite pro-German sympathies, to Charles A. Lindberg, who thought that Hitler could not be beaten. Attention here will not be directed at these extremely small fringe groups, but at the "average" American, as …

The Aaron Burr Trial, Claudia Bell Jan 1967

The Aaron Burr Trial, Claudia Bell

Honors Theses

The Aaron Burr trial was one of the most interesting cases in American history. Not only was the testimony at th einquiry significant but all events leading to the trial were important. Only those occurrences in Burr's life which led to his trial are described, since personal situations have no bearing on the case. The trial itself has been done with as much detail as possible in order to make the outcome of the inquest understandable.

The Relationship Of John Cotton And Anne Hutchinson In The Antinomian Controversy, Lois R. Helmbold

Honors Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the Antinomian controversy in Massachusetts Bay, in terms of the relationship between the principal figures of the struggle, John Cotton and Anne Hutchinson. A by-product has been an analysis of the controversy in terms of its relationship to the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
