Land, Labor, And Leadership: The Political Economy Of Hualapai Community Building, 1910-1940, Jeffrey P. Shepherd Jan 2004

Land, Labor, And Leadership: The Political Economy Of Hualapai Community Building, 1910-1940, Jeffrey P. Shepherd

Jeffrey P Shepherd

Increasingly, scholars are exploring the complex interplay between economic change and cultural identity, in which native communities and individuals respond creatively to the challenges post by captialism and wage labor. Utilizing political economy as an interpretive framework, this essay explores the ways Hualapais incorporated changes around them into their worldviews and agendas. In doing so, it moves beyond questions of agency and adapptation, persistence and innovation, to suggest that scholars consider how "incorporation," frequently seen as a unidirectional, not to mention wholly destructive, phenomenon, can in fact me multifaceted and constructive.

Sling: “Richter Der Letzten Instanz”, Sace E. Elder

Sace E. Elder

In the 1920s courtroom reportage became an important journalistic genre in the 1920s as leftist and liberal reporters filed into the halls of justice and analyzed what they saw and heard there in order to expose the injustices of a judicial system that had not embraced the liberal republic. Paul Schlesinger, who wrote under the pseudonym Sling, along with his colleagues Carl von Ossietzky, Kurt Tucholsky, Gabrielle Tiergit wrote of the sensational and the mundane, the political and the everyday cases, all of which provided the basis for social commentary and political criticism. Some have argued that the eagerness of …

Marion Lawrence Peabody Diary Project, Margaret Lowe Dec 2003

Marion Lawrence Peabody Diary Project, Margaret Lowe

Margaret Lowe

Marion Lawrence Peabody’s exceptional, twelve-volume diary, which she kept throughout her long life (1875-1968), has sat, for the most part, collecting dust at the Massachusetts Historical Society. Appointed as Peabody’s editor by the New England Women’s Diaries Project and having signed a book contract with Northeastern University Press (2004), I plan to bring Peabody’s words to light. Her voice deserves to be heard and examined. Engaging, vivacious, and introspective, this upper class Bostonian left a detailed record of her world and her sense of self. Though we already think we know about upper class, urban women; in fact few of …

The Familiar And The Strange: Western Travelers' Maps Of Europe And Asia, Ca. 1600-1800, Jordana Dym Dec 2003

The Familiar And The Strange: Western Travelers' Maps Of Europe And Asia, Ca. 1600-1800, Jordana Dym

Jordana Dym

Early Modern European travelers sought to gather and disseminate knowledge through narratives written for avid publishers and public. Yet not all travelers used the same tools to inform their readers. Despite a shared interest in conveying new knowledge based on eyewitness authority, Grand Tour accounts differed in an important respect from travelogues about Asia: they were less likely to include maps until the late eighteenth century. This paper examines why, using travel accounts published between 1600 and 1800 about Italy and (...) France (Europe) and India and Japan (Asia). It argues that maps of different types--coastlines, city plans, country topographies--appeared …

Law, Justice, And Power: Between Reason And Will (Stanford University Press), Sinkwan Cheng Dec 2003

Law, Justice, And Power: Between Reason And Will (Stanford University Press), Sinkwan Cheng

Sinkwan Cheng

This is an unprecedented volume that brings together J. Hillis Miller, Julia Kristeva, Slavoj Zizek, Ernesto Laclau, Alain Badiou, Nancy Fraser, and other prominent intellectuals from five countries in seven disciplines to provide fresh perspectives on the new configurations of law, justice, and power in the global age. The work engages and challenges past and present scholarship on current topics in legal studies: globalization, post-colonialism, multiculturalism, ethics, post-structuralism, and psychoanalysis. The book is divided into five parts. The first debates issues of (trans-)national justice and human rights in the global age, focusing on military interventions and refugee policies. Part II …

Jedediah S. Smith And Marcus And Narcissa Whitman: Mountain Men And Missionaries In The Far West, Barton Barbour

Barton H. Barbour

This article compares the experiences of missionaries and mountain men in the early years (1825-1848) of US occupancy of the "Oregon Country," which included today's Idaho. For very different reasons, both the Whitmans and Jedediah S. Smith entered the pantheon of 19th century American iconic "heros," but their real lives were more complex and ambiguous than the mythology suggests. This article explains and analyzes the myths and realities surrounding Marcus and Narcissa Whitman, and Jedediah S. Smith. For a sample, read the following introductory paragraph: Dateline: The Cimarron River near the Kansas-New Mexico border, May 1831 A lone horseman, his …

In The Name Of The Nation: Reflections On Nationalism And Patriotism, Rogers Brubaker Dec 2003

In The Name Of The Nation: Reflections On Nationalism And Patriotism, Rogers Brubaker

Rogers Brubaker

Treating nationhood as a political claim rather than an ethnocultural fact, this paper asks how “nation” works as a category of practice, a political idiom, a claim. What does it mean to speak “in the name of the nation”? And how should one assess the practice of doing so? Taking issue with the widely held view that “nation” is an anachronistic and indefensible or at least deeply suspect category, the paper sketches a qualified defence of inclusive forms of nationalism and patriotism in the contemporary American context, arguing that they can help develop more robust forms of citizenship, provide support …
