Kapitalizmus És Szocializmus Bibó István Gondolatrendszerében [István Bibó On Capitalism And Socialism], Peter Cserne Oct 2003

Kapitalizmus És Szocializmus Bibó István Gondolatrendszerében [István Bibó On Capitalism And Socialism], Peter Cserne

Péter Cserne

Although István Bibó’s (1911–1979) reputation in Hungary is based on his political and historical essays, he has written much on economic and social issues as well. As an anti-speculative thinker, he formulated his views each time in the context of actual economic and social problems. Starting from the critique of modernity and a sort of elitism in the 30’s, his interest turned toward the serious deformations of Hungarian social structure, especially the situation of the agrarian population. His great private lecture on The Meaning of the Development of European Society (1971–72) treated the history of Europe from a philosophical perspective …

"'That's My Place!': Negotiating Gender, Racial, And Sexual Politics In San Francisco's Gay Latino Alliance, 1975~1983", Horacio N. Roque Ramirez Dr.

Horacio N Roque Ramirez, Ph.D.

This essay considers the founding, development, and dissolution in San Francisco of the Gay Latino Alliance, one of the first organizations of its kind in the nation, and examines how its members negotiated the racial, gender, and sexual politics of the period. It discusses specifically the coming together of GALA’s founders, GALA’s negotiation between the “Latino” and “gay” social and political cultures, and GALA’s dissolution in the midst of gender and sex conflicts. To explore the intersectional dynamics of their racial, sexual, and gendered work and leisure, the essay relies partly upon surviving documents and heavily upon the memories of …

Genocide In The Non-Western World: Implications For Holocaust Studies, Robert Cribb Jan 2003

Genocide In The Non-Western World: Implications For Holocaust Studies, Robert Cribb

Robert Cribb

The example of the Holocaust has tended to dominate genocide studies, but the broader study of extreme violence makes it difficult to exclude the mass killing of indigenous peoples and mass killing on political grounds from the category of genocide.

Japan And Transformation Of National Identities In The Imperial Era, Li Narangoa, Robert Cribb Jan 2003

Japan And Transformation Of National Identities In The Imperial Era, Li Narangoa, Robert Cribb

Robert Cribb

Japan's view of the nationality of its Asian neightbours took many forms during the imperial era. In some respects Japan asserted its superiority to those neighbours, in other respects saw them as nations with a standing equal to that of Japan. The working out of these two views reflected Japanese strategic interests.

Environmentalism In Indonesian Politics, Robert Cribb

Robert Cribb

Environmential politics emerged in Indonesia during the autheoritarian Suharto era. Rather than being a reaction to Suharto's predatory approach to the environment, many environmental policies were closely tied to the managerial, technocratic and campaign-oriented approach of the New Order.

Science, Identity, And The Construction Of The Gay Political Narrative, Nancy J. Knauer Jan 2003

Science, Identity, And The Construction Of The Gay Political Narrative, Nancy J. Knauer

Nancy J. Knauer

This Article contends that the current debate over gay civil rights is, at base, a dispute over the nature of same-sex desire. Pro-gay forces advocate an ethnic or identity model of homosexuality based on the conviction that sexual orientation is an immutable, unchosen, and benign characteristic. The assertion that, in essence, gays are "born that way," has produced a gay political narrative that rests on claims of shared identity (i.e., homosexuals are a blameless minority) and arguments of equivalence (i.e., as a blameless minority, homosexuals deserve equal treatment and protection against discrimination). The pro-family counter-narrative is based on a behavioral …

Die Fortwährende Konstruktion Des Computernutzers: Leitbilder In Der Entwicklung Der Mensch-Computer-Kommunikation, Michael Friedewald Jan 2003

Die Fortwährende Konstruktion Des Computernutzers: Leitbilder In Der Entwicklung Der Mensch-Computer-Kommunikation, Michael Friedewald

Michael Friedewald

Steamboats Of Monmouth County, New Jersey. Lecture Presented At The Atlantic Highlands Historical Society, Atlantic Highlands, Nj, November, 2003., Megan E. Springate

Megan E. Springate

Steamboats provided a critical commercial link between Monmouth County, New Jersey and New York City from the early nineteenth through the third quarter of the twentieth centuries. Over 200 vessels have been documented as plying Monmouth County's waters, carrying farm goods to market and leisure patrons to the shore. This presentation summarizes the steamboat's history in Monmouth County, and provides several examples of vessels that ran in the area.

Material Culture As Memory: Combs And Cremation In Early Medieval Britain, Howard M. R. Williams Jan 2003

Material Culture As Memory: Combs And Cremation In Early Medieval Britain, Howard M. R. Williams

Howard M. R. Williams

This paper argues that mortuary practices can be understood as ‘technologies of remembrance’. The frequent discovery of combs in early medieval cremation burials can be explained by their mnemonic significance in the post-cremation rite. Combs (and other objects used to maintain the body’s surface in life) served to articulate the reconstruction of the deceased’s personhood in death through strategies of remembering and forgetting. This interpretation suggests new perspectives on the elationships between death, material culture and social memory in early medieval Europe.
