Polish Immigrants And Industrial Chicago, Dominic Pacyga Oct 2003

Polish Immigrants And Industrial Chicago, Dominic Pacyga

Dominic Pacyga

How did working-class immigrants from Poland create new communities in Chicago during the industrial age? This book explores the lives of immigrants in two iconic Polish neighborhoods—the Back of the Yards and South Chicago—and the stockyards and steel mills in which they made their living.

Pacyga shows how Poles forged communities on the South Side in an attempt to preserve the customs of their homeland—how through the development of churches, the building of schools, the founding of street gangs, and the opening of saloons they tried to recreate the feel of an Eastern European village. Through such institutions, Poles also …

Kapitalizmus És Szocializmus Bibó István Gondolatrendszerében [István Bibó On Capitalism And Socialism], Peter Cserne Oct 2003

Kapitalizmus És Szocializmus Bibó István Gondolatrendszerében [István Bibó On Capitalism And Socialism], Peter Cserne

Péter Cserne

Although István Bibó’s (1911–1979) reputation in Hungary is based on his political and historical essays, he has written much on economic and social issues as well. As an anti-speculative thinker, he formulated his views each time in the context of actual economic and social problems. Starting from the critique of modernity and a sort of elitism in the 30’s, his interest turned toward the serious deformations of Hungarian social structure, especially the situation of the agrarian population. His great private lecture on The Meaning of the Development of European Society (1971–72) treated the history of Europe from a philosophical perspective …

Illustrating The Music Of The Mass: A Case Study, Elizabeth Teviotdale

Elizabeth C Teviotdale

A study of the figural decoration of a late 11th-century gradual from Toulouse (London, BL, MS Harley 4951, fols. 121-301), concluding that the psalmodic origin of the texts of many chants of the mass informed the way in which those of the 11th century conceived the chants.

"'That's My Place!': Negotiating Gender, Racial, And Sexual Politics In San Francisco's Gay Latino Alliance, 1975~1983", Horacio N. Roque Ramirez Dr. Apr 2003

"'That's My Place!': Negotiating Gender, Racial, And Sexual Politics In San Francisco's Gay Latino Alliance, 1975~1983", Horacio N. Roque Ramirez Dr.

Horacio N Roque Ramirez, Ph.D.

This essay considers the founding, development, and dissolution in San Francisco of the Gay Latino Alliance, one of the first organizations of its kind in the nation, and examines how its members negotiated the racial, gender, and sexual politics of the period. It discusses specifically the coming together of GALA’s founders, GALA’s negotiation between the “Latino” and “gay” social and political cultures, and GALA’s dissolution in the midst of gender and sex conflicts. To explore the intersectional dynamics of their racial, sexual, and gendered work and leisure, the essay relies partly upon surviving documents and heavily upon the memories of …

The Chicago Bungalow, Dominic Pacyga, Charles Shanabruch Mar 2003

The Chicago Bungalow, Dominic Pacyga, Charles Shanabruch

Dominic Pacyga

The Chicago Bungalow is more than a housing style indigenous to the city. It epitomizes Chicago's work ethic and its rewards for successive waves of ethnic newcomers to the city since the early 20th century. In this book, the Chicago Architecture Foundation interprets both the design and the meaning of these homes, in keeping with CAF's mission to raise awareness of Chicago's architectural legacy.

After 1915, new neighborhoods appeared across the prairie. The Chicago-style bungalow came to both dominate and symbolize these areas. A one and one-half story single-family freestanding home, it included such conveniences as electricity, indoor plumbing, and …

Welfare And Warfare: American Organized Labor Approaches The Military-Industrial Complex, 1949-1964, Edmund F. Wehrle Jan 2003

Welfare And Warfare: American Organized Labor Approaches The Military-Industrial Complex, 1949-1964, Edmund F. Wehrle

Edmund F. Wehrle

Historians have been almost unanimous in condemning American organized labor's postwar relationship with the military-industrial complex.(1) Most follow Nelson Lichtenstein's assessment of a movement sacrificing militancy in favor of a junior partnership in a corporate state dominated by employers and the state. This capitulation legitimized managerial authority, validated a regressive economic system, and latched labor's wagon to a reactionary foreign policy and an emerging garrison state(2) This latter relationship, in particular, has galled critics of American organized labor. By the 1970s, they could assert, as did even "labor priest" Monsignor Charles Owen Rice, that labor had become a "lackey of …

African Americans And Land Loss In Texas: Government Duplicity And Discrimination Based On Race And Class, Debra A. Reid Jan 2003

African Americans And Land Loss In Texas: Government Duplicity And Discrimination Based On Race And Class, Debra A. Reid

Debra A. Reid

"African American Farmers and Land Loss in Texas," surveys the ways that discrimination at the local, state, and national levels constrained minority farmers during the twentieth century. It considers the characteristics of small-scale farming that created liabilities for landowners regardless of race, including state and federal programs that favored commercial and agribusiness interests. In addition to economic challenges African American farmers had to negotiate racism in the Jim Crow South. The Texas Agricultural Extension Service, the state branch of the USDA's Extension Service, segregated in 1915. The "Negro" division gave black farmers access to information about USDA programs, but it …

Genocide In The Non-Western World: Implications For Holocaust Studies, Robert Cribb Jan 2003

Genocide In The Non-Western World: Implications For Holocaust Studies, Robert Cribb

Robert Cribb

The example of the Holocaust has tended to dominate genocide studies, but the broader study of extreme violence makes it difficult to exclude the mass killing of indigenous peoples and mass killing on political grounds from the category of genocide.
