The University of Maine System developed distance education methods based on interactive technologies to bring higher education to communities across Maine. The network of campuses and sites was known as the "Educational Network of Maine," and was linked by an interactive television system housed on the campus of the University of Maine at Augusta. A fiber optic spine connected seven university campuses with two way audio and video transmission. From the campuses, programming was distributed by ITFS microwave to over 85 locations in Maine.

It includes over 8000 postcards arranged by subject, approximately 6000 antique postcards including 650 cards with views of the state of Maine, and 5259 postcards of steamships, battleships, foreign ships, and ocean liners.

Barbara Dunn Hitchner was born 4 March 1898 in Orono, Maine and was a graduate of the University of Maine, Class of 1920. She was dedicated to her research of the history of Maine and the genealogy of many of the early families of the Penobscot Valley. Materials in the collection generally include newspaper clippings, original records and copies of original records, and notes from various sources. Genealogies also include Barbara Dunn Hitchner correspondence.

The collection contains papers of various members of the Devereux family of Penobscot, Maine, as well as materials from other residents of Penobscot and Castine, Maine. Most notable are letters to Mark Devereux, 1862-1864, from his brother Charles Devereux while Charles was serving in the 16th Maine Infantry in Maryland and Virginia. Documents associated with various other individuals are also found in the collection; their relationship to the Devereux family is unclear.

The Martinon Lumber Company had its main office in Bangor, Maine, with a Canadian office in St. John, New Brunswick. This collection includes business records of the Martinon Lumber Company from 1916 to 1926. The first series, executive records, is the largest in the collection and is made up primarily of incoming and outgoing correspondence. Many letters are between the Bangor and New Brunswick offices and are to or from Irving G. Stetson, Frank Hinckley, or Waldo Lowell.

The University of Maine was founded in 1865 as the State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts; in 1897 it became the University of Maine. The board of trustees for the State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts met for the first time in Augusta on April 25, 1865. Ellen Louise Payson was born in Portland, Maine in 1894, and trained as a landscape architect at the Lowthorpe School of Landscape Architecture for Women in Groton, Massachusetts. She gained widespread recognition for her designs for private estates in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York.

The collection consists of about 525 architectural drawings including landscape architecture plans, contour drawings, planting diagrams and blueprints. There are also detailed drawings of fences, garden paths, outbuildings and gates. Before joining the University of Maine staff in 1952 Hamilton served as city editor of the Daily Kennebec Journal in Augusta, Maine. During World War II he served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was instrumental in the drafting and passage of Maine's "Right to Know" law in 1959.

Maxine Elliott was born Jessie Dermot, in 1868 in Rockland, Maine. She was an actress who appeared in her first play in 1890 and her last in 1920. She owned and played in the Maxine Elliott Theater, in New York which opened in 1908. She died in 1940.

Marli Frances Weiner was born January 9, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Walter and Phyllis (Hirsch) Weiner. She received her undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University, a master's degree in history from Sarah Lawrence College, and a doctorate in history from the University of Rochester in 1986.

Many of the source files include Dr. Weiner's research notes and provide page numbers, quotations, and responses to each text. The Penobscot Chemical Fibre Company was established in 1882 as a sawmill site in Old Town, Maine, which had been running since about 1860. The name was changed to the Penobscot Company in 1964. In 1967 the company was acquired by Diamond International Corporation and became the Penobscot Division of Diamond International. In 1983 the facility at Old Town was purchased by James River Corporation. In 2000 Georgia-Pacific purchased and took over operation of the Old Town plant.
