This record of my personal experiences during the occupation of Columbia by the Federal army under General W. T. Sherman, I dedicate to you, my dear children, remembering well how eagerly I sought for and cherished every tradition and scrap of history handed down to me by my parents of their parents, who were participants in the War of the Revolution.
