Poetic Portraits Of Older Women In The Great Black Swamp, Sandra L. Faulkner

ICS Fellow Lectures

Dr. Faulkner discusses the importance of oral histories and listening to older women by presenting poetic portraits of older women in the Bowling Green area that she co-created from oral histories. This was a collaborative project with The Wood County Committee on Aging, the BGSU archives, and local women Faulkner interviewed about their experiences across their life course and contributions to our community. These poetic portraits and oral histories will be archived at the BGSU libraries for all of us to learn from.

The Civil War In Southwest Virginia, Darlene Richardson

Articles about Hollins and Special Collections

Ellen Adair was a sweet, somewhat silly 17-year-old and well into her second year at Hollins Institute when one day in January 1863, with the Civil War showing no sign of ending anytime soon, her father unexpectedly showed up to take her home. Ellen’s idyllic days as a Hollins student were ending, and fate held cards it had yet to show. Diary entries from the period show the impact of war on a formerly quiet part of the state.

Utilizing autobiographies, advertising, journalism, novels, and political tracts, among other sources, Browder traces appearances of the armed woman across a chronological spectrum from …

Personal Experiences Of Mrs. Campbell Bryce During The Burning Of Columbia, South Carolina By General W. T. Sherman's Army, February 17, 1865, Campbell Bryce

Local History

This record of my personal experiences during the occupation of Columbia by the Federal army under General W. T. Sherman, I dedicate to you, my dear children, remembering well how eagerly I sought for and cherished every tradition and scrap of history handed down to me by my parents of their parents, who were participants in the War of the Revolution. Though this story has often been told, and is old and familiar, I flatter myself that your children and your children's children will appreciate my record far more than you do now, to whom it is more. than a …
