This accession contains over 4,000 folk beliefs organized on individual, 4x6-inch index cards. A majority of the belief cards were collected by students participating during the 1960s as part of the American Folklore course taught by Dr. Edward D. “Sandy” Ives. Folk beliefs originate primarily from Maine and the Maritimes, but occasionally extend into other areas. Each download contains a copy of the 1965 syllabus for American Folklore, explaining the assignment given to students.

West Branch Logging Camp Clerk Henry A. Milliken's Newspaper Writings: An Annotated Bibliography, 1927-1977, William W. Geller

Abstract provided by author: Henry A. Milliken, a Great Northern Paper Company logging camp operations clerk 1926-1939, wrote 230 articles for the Bangor, Lewiston and Portland newspapers between 1926 and 1977. He was one of only five West Branch loggers who wrote a substantial amount about their experiences and observations in logging operations and the only writer whose focus was the human nature of the men in the logging operation jobs he wrote about. Abstract provided by the author: Beginning January 1, 1903 the Penobscot Log Driving Company, a confederation of loggers, gave way to Great Northern Paper Company that formed about 1900 and took over log driving operations in 1903. The 1970 drive was the last one and a clean up drive followed in 1971. This compendium of history and pictures (445) of Chesuncook Lake covers the 18 townships with water flowing into it from the north, east and south.
