In the common room of Huber Hall, there hangs high on the wall a dingy looking portrait of an older gentleman, dressed in a dark suit with round-framed glasses and graying hair. Beneath this portrait framed in faded gold is a small, tarnished, black plaque that gives a name to this curious looking man and briefly describes some of his accomplishments. At the corner of Washington and High Streets in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania stands a modest old house—an anachronism that somehow seems so fitting in a town of such rich history. In the foreground lies a fairly inconspicuous plaque with condensed text—easy to miss on a leisurely car ride past the antiquated structure. Casually passing by, residents and tourists alike might not give the house a second thought or reflect on its origins. Charles H. Huber was born June 7, 1871 in Nebraska City, NE, the son of Eli Huber (Class of 1855 and the first professor of English Bible at Gettysburg College), and Mary E. Deibert Huber. Upon graduating from Gettysburg College in 1892, Charles was hired as a tutor at Gettysburg Academy, appointed vice-principal in 1893 and headmaster in 1896. He earned his A.M. from Gettysburg College and Litt.D. from Gettysburg Theological Seminary both in 1895. After the Gettysburg Academy closed in 1935, he was appointed Director of Gettysburg College's Women's Division, and held that position until his retirement in 1941. …
