With the pandemic prohibiting in-person learning and campus visits, the college offered an assortment of creative online offerings this summer to give newly admitted DePaul students a taste of the LAS experience. Among the offerings were a mini-course, "Critical Perspectives on Our Current Moment," taught using Zoom, an introduction to the Center for Black Diaspora and the Center for Latino Research, and panel discussions with current students and faculty in the Honors program.

The Curious Case Of Oliver Ward

Uniersity Archivist Andrea Bainbridge discovered in the archives of the Vincentians' DeAndreis-Rosati Memorial Archives that a history of the Ward family at DePaul provided a unique framework to tell the story of the university before, during and after World War I (1914-1918). Two years in the making, the “Glimpses of the Great War” exhibit was the result.

Preserving Pullman: Historic District Becomes Illinois' First National Monument

Pullman has long had a place in history, labor and urban planning, but the spotlight on this far South Side neighborhood is about to get a whole lot brighter. On Feb. 19, President Barack Obama announced the designation of the Pullman Historic District as a national monument. With this move, Pullman entered the National Park Service portfolio, joining such iconic American sites as the Grand Canyon, the Statue of Liberty and Mount Rushmore, and becoming the first national monument in Illinois. Pullman's history, architectural significance, and residents are spotlighted.

The first English translation of the funeral oration in memory of Vincent de Paul delivered by Bishop Henri de Maupas du Tour on 23 November 1660. The text of the oration was published in January 1661. The oration is the first public reflection on the life, virtue, and accomplishment of the recently deceased Monsieur Vincent. The translation is fully annotated and is accompanied by three introductory chapters: the first discusses Maupas du Tour, the second analyzes the content of the oration, and the final chapter examines the course of the canonization cause of Vincent de Paul from his death until …

I am delighted to introduce this eighth volume of Creating Knowledge: The LAS Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship. This volume features 19 essays and 14 art works, representing advanced coursework produced in twenty different departments and programs during the 2014-2015 academic year. Several of the essays have been honored with department awards and several draw on research supported by undergraduate research grants. Many were originally written in senior capstone seminars, research-intensive seminars, and independent studies, and many were presented in some form at one of the numerous conferences and showcases sponsored by departments and programs throughout the year. I Remember: Chicago Veterans of War weaves together the memories of fifty veterans of World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Throughout the book, each veteran speaks in a series of “I remember” statements labeled by a number, not a name. This anonymous structure foregrounds the similarities of all wars. The effect is of one veteran speaking of the shock and scale of every modern war. I Remember is available free in both digital and print format.

This research considers how French female lawyers participated in legal reform during the period from 1900 to 1940. Frenchwomen were admitted to the legal profession in 1900 by an act of parliament and this reform brought political implications in its wake. My research on the first cadres of female lawyers illustrates that that they were unusually political active. As unequal members of the profession and unequal citizens in the society many of these new professionals engaged in a vigorous defense of equality and justice.

'A Triumph Of Brains Over Brute': Women And Science At The Horticultural College, Swanley, 1890-1910, Donald L. Opitz

The founding of Britain's first horticultural college in 1889 advanced a scientific and coeducational response to three troubling national concerns: a major agricultural depression; the economic distress of single, unemployed women; and imperatives to develop the colonies. Buoyed by the technical instruction and women's movements, the Horticultural College and Produce Company, Limited, at Swanley, Kent, crystallized a transformation in the horticultural profession in which new science-based, formalized study threatened an earlier emphasis on practical apprenticeship training, with the effect of opening male-dominated trades to women practitioners. Bio: [by Biana Andino] Bueno Silva is the second child and oldest son in a family of 14. During WWII, Silva fled from the Japanese Army in Manila, Philippines. In 1946 his parents migrated to Gen. Santso City, South Cotabato, Philippines and where he earned his Elementary and High School education from Notre Dame of Dadiangas.
