An observation of literature extant regarding the revelations accepted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as being divinely given through Joseph Smith, discloses that the field has not been probed very thoroughly. Many are the sermons and discourses preached from the pulpit by exegetes of Mormonism vindicating the book of Doctrine and Covenants as being authentic. Few, however, have made a study of the history, origin, and development of this book.

The purpose of this study is two fold: first, to review the historical sources pertaining to the observance of fasting from the time of the establishment of the church in 1830 until 1896, when the last essential change in its observance occurred; and second, as the payment of fast offerings is so closely related to an analysis of the subject, to trace its development out of the Church's policy to provide for its poor.

Millard County, Utah is located one hundred and fifty miles south of Salt Lake City in the west central part of the state. The county is bounded on the north by Juab County, on the west by Nevada, on the south by Beaver County, and on the east by Sevie, Sanpete, and Juab Counties.
There are interesting formations of extinct volcanoes. Fossils can be found and well marked evidences of an ancient lake named Bonneville.

The Nauvoo Legion takes its name from the city in Illinois which was the center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the early 1840's, when the Mormon militia was organized. When the Mormons were driven to the Rocky Mountains they revived the militia, in 1849, under its original title.
The legislative organization of the Utah Nauvoo Legion was carried out through enactments of three lawmaking bodies, the High Council of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Legislature of the State of Deseret, and the Legislature of the Territory of Utah.

The problem for this thesis was undertaken because of an intense interest which the writer has in general Western History and more particularly in the History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As the thousands of emigrants moved west to make their homes, they brought with them only enough supplies to support themselves for a relatively short time. When those supplies were gone they needed replacements in order not to bring hardships to the settlers. Where were these precious supplies to come from? The Indian agent, the trapper, or the citizens of small Iowa townships were undoubtedly startled to see such a large movement of people and wagons across the state of Iowa. This paper will be confined to the northern portion of the range though it might be noted that the topographical descriptions of the Bingham district apply in a general way to the southern district also. The northern Oquirrhs contain a number of sizeable canyons running either east or west from a central ridge seven thousand to eight thousand feet in altitude. Bingham Canyon, one of the largest of these, is located on the eastern slope of the range and drains into Salt Lake Valley.

Brigham Young was an American product of the nineteenth century. John Calvin was a European product of the sixteenth century. Each of these men left definite impressions upon world history. Of the two, Calvin is more widely understood and better known, but we should remember that the element of time was in his favor.
