Dispelling The Fog About Direct Taxation, James Campbell Jan 2012

Dispelling The Fog About Direct Taxation, James Campbell

James Campbell

A full interpretation of capitation taxes in their historical context is here used as the key to a fresh understanding of the nature and practice of apportioned direct taxation under the Constitution. Contrary to common misconceptions, it appears that none of the key elements of the Federal powers of direct taxation – capitations, other direct taxes, and apportionment – are of uncertain meaning, or no longer of any relevance because of the abolition of slavery. Evidence for these conclusions is drawn from historical studies of taxation, records of the Constitutional Convention, Federal and state tax statutes of the period, contemporaneous …

The "revisionist" point of view quite often meets recently on pages of the special literature - in a counterbalance to the former scheme of immemorial opposition of liberal intelligency and the inert bureaucracy, anxious is exclusive preserving of social order both the satisfied stagnancy and darkness of the lowest classes. Last point of view canonised in numerous Soviet works (even with the necessary reservations on liberal incompleteness and potential adoptive «bourgeois intelligency») itself goes back to images of antiautocratic publicism of the beginning of the XX-th century. At the same time this confrontational picture - adjusted for subjectivity of participants …

‘Adapt Or Divest: The New Economic Policy And Foreign Businesses In Malaysia (1970-2000), Shakila Yacob Dr, Khadijah Md Khalid Dr

Shakila Yacob

Megan E. Springate

The Wiawaka Holiday House on Lake George, New York is among the oldest continuously operating women’s holiday retreats in the United States. The Holiday House was founded on the grounds of a failing resort hotel at the turn of the twentieth century by wealthy women largely from industrial families to provide factory “girls” opportunities for healthful vacations in the countryside. Before the Holiday House was established, the property was the site of two resort hotels; their histories, spanning much of the nineteenth century, reflect the rise and transformations in the Adirondack resort hotel business. Presented in the early stages of …
