The Abnā' Al-Dawla: The Definition And Legitimation Of Identity In Response To The Fourth Fitna, John Turner
The Abnā' Al-Dawla: The Definition And Legitimation Of Identity In Response To The Fourth Fitna, John Turner
John P. Turner
This article will reopen the question about the identity and provenance of the abnā' al-dawla. Who were they? When did they form as a collective and why? The standard view is that the abnā' al-dawla were the backbone of the Abbasid dynasty, coming into existence with that regime after the revolution circa 132/750 and consisting of the original fighters from Khurasan and their descendants, who formed an elite social and political structure of supporters. This privileged status accorded them the moniker abnā' al-dawla (sons/supporters of the dynasty).
Cotton Mather's Involvement In The Salem Crisis, Rebecca Smith
Cotton Mather's Involvement In The Salem Crisis, Rebecca Smith
Rebecca Smith
Cotton Mather’s Involvement in the Salem Crisis is about the role Mather played during the witchcraft trials. Mather came from a long line of Puritan ministers. His father was a very influential minister in New England during the Salem Crisis, as were several of his uncles. Mather took part in the crisis by observing people thought to be bewitched, publishing accounts of those observations and also by publishing other books about the trial. There are also letters written by Mather to judges and other administrators, which strongly urge caution. There is a debate between Mather’s critics and supporters about his …

The Opium Problem: A Review Essay, David Courtwright
The Opium Problem: A Review Essay, David Courtwright
David T. Courtwright
Opium is one of the most useful and complex drugs in medical history. Made from the juice of the unripe seed capsule of the opium poppy, it contains several valuable alkaloids. Three of these, morphine, codeine, and thebaine—the last when processed into semisynthetic opioids like oxycodone—have potent analgesic effects. The rub is that opium-based drugs present as many risks as benefits. Overdose and addiction threaten individual lives. Widespread abuse and trafficking can threaten society itself.
Examples of personal and social ruin fill the pages of Thomas Dormandy's and Hans Derks's ambitious histories of opium. Dormandy begins his narrative in antiquity, …

Introduction To Eugene V. Debs: Citizen And Socialist, Nick Salvatore
Introduction To Eugene V. Debs: Citizen And Socialist, Nick Salvatore
Nick Salvatore
[Excerpt] This is a social biography of Eugene Victor Debs. It is a traditional biography in that it emphasizes this one individual's personal and public life as far as the evidence allows. But the book is also a piece of social history that assumes individuals do not stand outside the culture and society they grew in and from. I have stressed each aspect of Debs's story in order to present both the importance of the man and a more complete picture of the political and cultural struggles his society engaged in during his lifetime. Neither in his time nor in …
Deeply Within: Catholicism, Faith And History, Nick Salvatore
Deeply Within: Catholicism, Faith And History, Nick Salvatore
Nick Salvatore
[Excerpt] In the decade I spent living with Gene Debs, I thought much about faith's relation to intellect, especially in the political realm. It was not just that a socialist in capitalist America needed faith but rather that Debs's very vision of America's promise was itself a profound act of faith. But with the exception of the last chapter, which I titled, "A Species of Purging," following a phrase in one of Debs's prison letters, overt discussion of any religious sensibility was largely sotto voce, echoes of a private dialogue with myself. Pleased as I was with the book when …
The Effectiveness Of Reinstatement As A Public Policy Remedy: The Kohler Case, John Drotning, David Lipsky
The Effectiveness Of Reinstatement As A Public Policy Remedy: The Kohler Case, John Drotning, David Lipsky
David B Lipsky
This article is concerned with two aspects of the NLRB reinstatement remedy as applied in the famous Kohler case: (1) how effective the remedy was, particularly in terms of the number of employees who returned to Kohler under its protection, and (2) what factors, in order of significance, affected a worker's decision to return. The authors find the remedy was effective, since about 40 percent of those workers who received reinstatement offers accepted them. Regression and discriminant analyses of the variables affecting the decision to return confirm the thinking of labor market economists that the most disadvantaged worker (lower paid, …

To The Jew First: A Socio-Historical And Biblical-Theological Analysis Of The Pauline Teaching Of `Election' In Light Of Second Temple Jewish Patterns Of Thought, Anthony Thornhill
To The Jew First: A Socio-Historical And Biblical-Theological Analysis Of The Pauline Teaching Of `Election' In Light Of Second Temple Jewish Patterns Of Thought, Anthony Thornhill
A. Chadwick Thornhill
Paul's "doctrine" of election has remained a controversial and enigmatic topic for centuries. Few studies, however, have approached Paul's doctrine through the context of Second Temple Judaism. This study examines Paul's view of election through the lens of Second Temple Jewish texts written prior to 70 CE. In doing so, it is argued that the best framework through which to view Paul's discussion of election is through a primarily corporate model of election. While such a model is rooted in Judaism, Paul departs from his Jewish contemporaries in arguing that the locus of election is in God's Messiah, Jesus.
Obscurity In Medieval Texts, Lucie Doležalová, Jeff Rider, Alessandro Zironi
Obscurity In Medieval Texts, Lucie Doležalová, Jeff Rider, Alessandro Zironi
Jeff Rider
Modern readers of medieval texts often find them obscure. Some of this obscurity is accidental and inevitable due to the historical and cultural distance that separates modern readers from medieval authors, but medieval readers and authors also appear to have simply had a higher tolerance for textual obscurity than we do and even to have viewed obscurity as desirable and a virtue. They did not believe that obscurity could ever be eradicated and were not scared of the indescribable, indivisible, and ungraspable; they accepted reality as complex and ultimately unintelligible. Obscurity was not simply a riddle to be solved. It …

The Change Program: Methodology For Comparing Interactive Co-Active Coaching With A Prescriptive Lifestyle Treatment For Obesity, Don Morrow, Erin Pearson, Jennifer Irwin
Donald Morrow
Studies incorporating Motivational Interviewing via Co-Active life coaching (MI-via-CALC) have elicited positive results among obese adults; however there is a paucity of comprehensive MI-via-CALC-obesity research that includes sufficient statistical power and a validated comparison group. The purpose of this study was to compare two telephone-based interventions for obesity. University students were randomized to either a 12-week: (a) personalized MI-via-CALC program whereby a coach worked with participants to achieve goals; or (b) prescriptive education-based lifestyle treatment following the LEARN Program. This paper contains a detailed methodological account of the study with a view to informing the development of prospective coaching-based programs.

Dr Elizabeth Kleinhenz
Kathleen Fitzpatrick, born in 1905, was the grand - daughter of Melbourne real estate agent JR Buxton, whose investments in land and housing brought him wealth and significantly influenced much of his city's early development. In her memoir, Solid Bluestone Foundations, described by her great friend Manning Clark as 'a magnificent book of memories', Kathleen painted an evocative picture of family life at her grandparents' mansion Hughenden in Middle Park, and of middle - class living in early twentieth - century Melbourne. In adulthood she went on to become a brilliant academic and teacher whose former pupils became some of …

History Lab For Undergrads: A Day At The Museum, Elizabeth 'Libi' Sundermann

Museums are important venues for engaging history students in the habits of free-choice and lifelong learning. Although these sound like the pedagogical buzzwords du jour, both concepts are ones that educators today—including college professors and lecturers—should be adding to their teaching vocabulary. Unfortunately, while literature on these topics is widespread for K–12 educators, pedagogical and practical discussions for adult learners, particularly college students, have lagged. This article aims to help fill that gap. Encouraging free-choice learning through local public history venues, particularly museums, can serve as inspirations for college teachers and their students. Creatively mixed formal and informal teaching methods …

Culto A Los Ancestros, Hechiceros Y Resistencia Colonial: El Caso Di Gregorio Taco, Arequipa, 1750 / Luis A. Galdames R. & María Marsilli, Editores.., Maria Marsilli
María Marsilli
This book includes a full-length transcription of a 1751-1754 civil and ecclesiastical investigation against kuraca (native chief) Gregorio Taco, prominent community leader of Andagua, in the province of Arequipa, Peru. The original document can be found at the Archivo Arzobispal de Arequipa (AAA). Taco, a wealthy Indian merchant, was found guilty of practicing ancient Andean rituals, banned as demonic by the colonial church, that included healing, divination, ancestral mummies worshiping, and cult of mountain spirits (wamani). The investigation also revealed that Taco, thanks to these clandestine practices, had created a network of accomplices he used to enhance his social and …
Inventing The Egghead: The Battle Over Brainpower In American Culture, Aaron Lecklider
Inventing The Egghead: The Battle Over Brainpower In American Culture, Aaron Lecklider
Aaron S. Lecklider
Throughout the twentieth century, pop songs, magazine articles, plays, posters, and novels in the United States represented intelligence alternately as empowering or threatening. In Inventing the Egghead, cultural historian Aaron Lecklider offers a sharp, entertaining narrative of these sources to reveal how Americans who were not part of the traditional intellectual class negotiated the complicated politics of intelligence within an accelerating mass culture. Central to the book is the concept of brainpower—a term used by Lecklider to capture the ways in which journalists, writers, artists, and others invoked intelligence to embolden the majority of Americans who did not have access …
