The Bridge
They came singly and in small groups in the 1850' s. A
few settled in the cities, others moved on to the lumber
forests of Michigan and Wisconsin while more made their
destination the fertile farmlands of the midwest. A few of
the even more adventurous crossed the country or made
the long sail around the Straits of Magellan to California.

The Bridge
Standing on the deck in the cold of the night, I could
distinguish lights some distance away on both sides of the
ship. It was clear we were in a kind of channel. Another
passenger said it was a Norwegian fjord. How he could
tell, I didn't know, because it was pretty dark out there.
But one thing, was very clear. The captain of our ship, for
all his golden buttons and stripes, must have got lost
because he was supposed to find Denmark. Columbus
could have done better. I stood there in the dark and
thought about the matter …

The Bridge
Those of us who grew up in the Danish-American
colonies of the 30' s and 40' s experienced a life that has
now disappeared. It was a rich and unique life. It was a
time of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation immigrants adjusting
to the American culture and at the same time cherishing
their particular brand of Danish heritage.

The Bridge
Junction City, in the early thirties, was a sleepy, small
town located in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. With a
population of only a few hundred, it could hardly be
called a city. But the forefathers had visions of a major rail way
and highway junction at this location, providing prosperity
and a great future for all. As it was, the railway went
straight through town and trains seldom stopped there.

Labor At Home: The Domestic World Of Workers At The Du Pont Powder Mills, 1802-1902, Margaret M. Mulrooney
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
While the history of the du Pont family and Du Pont Company have been well-documented, little is known about the everyday lives of the Irish Catholic immigrants who lived and worked at the home plant near Wilmington, Delaware. to correct this oversight, "Labor at Home" explores every aspect of the powder workers' domestic world--from religious beliefs, family structure, gender relations, and ethnic ties, to houses, furnishings, and yards--and uses this data to support new conclusions about cultural identity and class affiliation. as early as the 1820s, for example, powder mill families began to convey their increasing affiliation with bourgeois American …

Journey: Connections To A Pioneer Past, Judy Shell Busk
Journey: Connections To A Pioneer Past, Judy Shell Busk
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a record of a journey into the pioneer past both literally and metaphorically. The physical journey retracing the Oregon and Mormon trails was made in September of 1993, the year I was a National Endowment for the Humanities/Reader's Digest Teacher-Scholar; however, my intellectual and emotional journey into the lives of pioneer women covers several years of study. I compare my life experiences with those of pioneer women whom I studied, using geographical settings on the trail trip as memory triggers. My husband, as my traveling companion, plays an important role in this journey of discovery. Major themes …
