Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Scanned items from Ada Viola Smith (Peters) alumni file. Smith earned a BA in French from the University and was a member of the Class of 1927.

Smith has frequently been referred to as the first African American graduate of the University of Maine. However, while she may have been one of the earliest Black graduate (and even the earliest female Black graduate) there is evidence of earlier Black graduates (see Frederico Matheas item in this collection).

The items include a note regarding Smith's death (1995), correspondence regarding Smith's donation to the University of Maine (1978), inauguration of Harry Philpott …

Holocaust-Denial Literature In Public Libraries: An Investigation Of Public Librarians' Attitudes Regarding Acquisition And Access, John A. Drobnicki, Carol R. Goldman, Trina R. Knight, Johanna V. Thomas Jan 1995

Holocaust-Denial Literature In Public Libraries: An Investigation Of Public Librarians' Attitudes Regarding Acquisition And Access, John A. Drobnicki, Carol R. Goldman, Trina R. Knight, Johanna V. Thomas

Publications and Research

This study was undertaken to learn about public librarians' attitudes and opinions concerning the sometimes conflicting issues of intellectual freedom, collection balance, and controversial materials. The investigation focused on Holocaust-denial literature, a body of work which tries to dispute or deny outright the historical reality of the Holocaust. The results, while ambiguous in some areas, indicate that librarians are more open to Holocaust-revisionist literature than had been predicted and, regardless of outside pressures, would acquire and provide ready access to this material in their libraries.

The Price Of Empire: Anglo-French Rivalry For The Great Lakes Fur Trades, 1700-1760, Matthew R. Laird

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

As the English and French grappled for North American hegemony in the first half of the eighteenth century, trade with the Indian groups of the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley transcended mere financial calculations and assumed a broader imperial significance. to the native peoples who exchanged their peltry for European manufactured goods, trade was the material manifestation of mutual obligation, political dialogue, and military alliance. If the contest for empire inevitably became a battle for the hearts and minds of potential Indian allies, the spoils of victory were most visibly reckoned in furs and skins.;Yet, despite the outspoken criticism of …

"A Friend To Go Between Them": Interpreters Among The Iroquois, 1664-1775, Nancy L. Hagedorn

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

In recent years, interest in early American Indian history and an emphasis on ethnohistorical methods have led to new approaches to the study of cultural contact in colonial America. Several scholars have used cross-cultural groups such as missionaries and white Indian captives as vehicles for analysis. Another group that moved relatively freely back and forth across the cultural divide was that of interpreters. From their intermediate position between European and Iroquois cultures, these men and women interpreted more than languages. Although linguistic skills were essential, successful mediation between Indians and Europeans also required a knowledge of the culture and customs …

A Study Of Two Attempts By President Plutarco ElíAs Calles To Establish A National Church In Mexico, Roger David Gouran Jan 1995

A Study Of Two Attempts By President Plutarco ElíAs Calles To Establish A National Church In Mexico, Roger David Gouran

Dissertations and Theses

In the one-hundred years between 1810 and 1926 there were many civil wars in Mexico. The last of these wars. La Cristiada, was not fought, as were the previous civil wars, by groups seeking political control of Mexico. Rather, the genesis of this war was a question of who would control the Church in Mexico. The war began when President Plutarco Elias Calles attempted to enforce rigorously certain articles of the Constitution of 1917 as well as two laws which he promulgated. If Calles had succeeded, he would, in fact, have created a church in Mexico controlled by the federal …

The Lesbian And Gay Past: An Interpretive Battleground, Polly Thistlethwaite Jan 1995

The Lesbian And Gay Past: An Interpretive Battleground, Polly Thistlethwaite

Publications and Research

The lesbian and gay past is an interpretive battleground that mainstream archives have refused to enter, assuming few risks in collecting, naming, or identifying archival collections. At the same time, libraries offer up worlds to those who work to unearth the secrets there.

The New York Public Library's 1994 "Becoming Visible" exhibit trumpeted The Arrival of lesbian and gay history to New York's cultural mainstream. The NYPL exhibit denies the library's role in secreting lesbian and gay history, and diminished the contributions of community-based archives to the exhibit.
