Parliaments in communist party states are usually treated in Western literature as "rubber stamp" institutions that simply approve policies made elsewhere. As such, these bodies do not perform functions of interest articulation, representation, or policy-making that are characteristic of many Western legislatures.

Dr. Samuel B. Woodward: A 19th Century Pioneer In American Psychiatric Care, Janet L. Dadoly, Len Levin, Lisa A. Palmer
Lisa A. Palmer
Objective: Showcase the life and work of Dr. Samuel B. Woodward, the medical superintendent of one of the first public hospitals for the mentally ill in the U.S., the Worcester State Hospital in Worcester, Mass. Dr. Woodward overcame then-popular views of mental illness to champion compassionate, optimistic, and individualized treatment for patients.
Methods: Dr. Samuel B. Woodward brought a significant paradigm shift to the dark world of mentally ill indigent citizens of Massachusetts in the early 19th century. When Dr. Woodward became the first superintendent of Worcester State Hospital in 1833, mentally ill patients were viewed with suspicion and fear …

The Alliance For Progress And Housing Policy In Rio De Janeiro And Buenos Aires In The 1960s, Leandro Benmergui
The Alliance For Progress And Housing Policy In Rio De Janeiro And Buenos Aires In The 1960s, Leandro Benmergui
Leandro Benmergui
This article explores the construction of publicly financed low-income housing complexes in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Buenos Aires, Argentina, in the 1960s. These housing developments were possible thanks to the arrival of foreign economic and technical assistance from the Alliance for Progress. Urban scholars, politicians, diplomats and urbanists of the Americas sought to promote middle-class habits, mass consumption and moderate political behaviour, especially among the poor, by expanding access to homeownership and ‘decent’ living conditions for a burgeoning urban population. As a result, the history of low-income housing should be understood within broader transnational discourses and practices about the …

Visual Tours Of Housing Projects In Buenos Aires And Rio De Janeiro, 1960s And 1970s (Multimedia Companion To The Special Issue: Transnational Urbanism In The Americas), Leandro Benmergui
Leandro Benmergui
The Multimedia Companion for the special issue of Urban History: 'Transnational Urbanism in the Americas', is an editorial project of Urban History’s North American Editorial Board. The emerging transnational paradigm raises many interesting possibilities for the historical study of cities. As the articles in the special issue suggest, transnationalism challenges us to map out the patterns of human life in new ways as they cross and construct cities, nations, and other crucial formations. Even as this new paradigm is causing a fundamental rethinking of our scholarship, the internet and the World Wide Web are also challenging our current modes of …

A Childe Bibliography: A Hand-List Of The Works Of Vere Gordon Childe, Terry Irving, Peter Gathercole
Terry Irving
A hand-list devoted to the published writings of Vere Gordon Childe (1892-1957). It includes political writings, letters to newspapers, and reviews, as well as his books, articles and contributions to books. It covers his Australian years as well his academic career in Britain. Because its aim is to create an historical record of both Childe's work and the continual contemporary interest in his ideas, the list is arranged year by year to highlight his productivity and the periods when attention to his work was greatest. There are four sections: (i) books and monographs; (ii) articles and chapters; (iii) reviews; and …

Making Property Productive: Reorganizing Rights To Real And Equitable Estates In Britain, 1660 To 1830, Gary Richardson
Making Property Productive: Reorganizing Rights To Real And Equitable Estates In Britain, 1660 To 1830, Gary Richardson
Gary Richardson
Between 1660 and 1830, Parliament passed thousands of Acts restructuring rights to real and equitable estates. These estate Acts enabled individuals and families to sell, mortgage, lease, exchange and improve land previously bound by inheritance rules and other legal legacies. The loosening of these legal constraints facilitated the reallocation of land and resources towards higher-value uses. Data reveal correlations between estate Acts, urbanization and economic development during the decades surrounding the Industrial Revolution.

This article traces the contours of a comparative, global, crossdisciplinary, and multiparadigmatic field that construes ethnicity, race, and nationhood as a single integrated family of forms of cultural understanding, social organization, and political contestation. It then reviews a set of diverse yet related efforts to study the way ethnicity, race, and nation work in social, cultural, and political life without treating ethnic groups, races, or nations as substantial entities, or even taking such groups as units of analysis at all.
"Athleticated" Versus Educated: A Qualitative Investigation Of Campus Perceptions, Recruiting And African American Male Student-Athletes, Keith Harrison
"Athleticated" Versus Educated: A Qualitative Investigation Of Campus Perceptions, Recruiting And African American Male Student-Athletes, Keith Harrison
Dr. C. Keith Harrison
The purpose of this study was to conduct a qualitative investigation of student narratives (N= 167) about the contemporary issue of recruiting high-profile African American male student-athletes. Participants were asked to view a scene on recruiting from the film, The Program (1994). Participants were then presented with questions regarding a recruiting trip by an African American football player to a traditionally white campus. Findings indicate that both Black and White students perceived the African American male student-athletes in the film scene to be more "athleticated" than educated. They were also perceived as stereotypical sex-objects. "When athletes (especially male) show up …
A Day In The Life Of A Male College Athlete: A Public Perception And Qualitative Campus Investigation, Keith Harrison
A Day In The Life Of A Male College Athlete: A Public Perception And Qualitative Campus Investigation, Keith Harrison
Dr. C. Keith Harrison
Perceptual confirmation paradigm (PCP) rooted in social psychology, can be implemented to frame sport science research questions (Stone, Perry, & Darley, 1997). Public perception of college athletes’ lives has been scarcely investigated in the sport sciences (Keels, 2005) using the PCP to prime stereotypes. The purpose of this study was to prime stereotypes about a day in the life of a college athlete by using qualitative inquiry to assess college students’ (N = 87) perceptions. Participants provided written responses about a day in the life of a college athlete. Two different college athlete targets were used “Tyrone Walker” (n = …

Explaining Abu Ghraib: A Review Essay, Christopher J. Einolf
Christopher J Einolf
Four books written by social scientists and published in 2007 are reviewed: The Trials of Abu Ghraib: An Expert Witness Account of Shame and Honor, by Stjepan Mestrovic; The Lucifer Effect, by Philip Zimbardo; Torture and the Twilight of Empire : From Algiers to Baghdad, by Marnia Lazreg; and Torture and Democracy, by Darius Rejali. Prior research on torture has left unsettled the question of the importance of training and direct orders as causes of torture, and the role of liberal democratic institutions in preventing torture. The four books demonstrate that the Abu Ghraib torturers did not act on their …
