To Settle Is To Conquer: Spaniards, Native Americans, And The Colonization Of Santa Elena In Sixteenth-Century Florida, Karen Lynn Paar Jan 1999

To Settle Is To Conquer: Spaniards, Native Americans, And The Colonization Of Santa Elena In Sixteenth-Century Florida, Karen Lynn Paar

Faculty & Staff Publications

Sixteenth-century Spaniards believed that “to settle is to conquer,” and they brought this tradition established during the Reconquest of the Iberian peninsula from the Moors to their conquest and colonization of the Americas. The Spaniards’ multi-faceted approach to settlement proved remarkably enduring as shown by the mid-1560s effort of Pedro Menendez de Aviles to claim La Florida, which then included much of the present-day southeastern United States. Within this territory Santa Elena, now known as Parris Island, South Carolina, came into the focus of French and Spanish monarchs as the political and religious battles raging in Europe in the mid-sixteenth …

"Through The Eye Of A Needle": The Role Of Pietistic And Mystical Thought Among The Anglican Elite In The Eighteenth Century Lowcountry South, Samuel C. Smith Jan 1999

"Through The Eye Of A Needle": The Role Of Pietistic And Mystical Thought Among The Anglican Elite In The Eighteenth Century Lowcountry South, Samuel C. Smith

Faculty Dissertations

This dissertation examines the transmission and eventual manifestation of Christian pietistic and mystical thought into the Colonial and Revolutionary lowcountry South. The facilitators of this transmission include the Continental Pietists, who were themselves heavily influenced by the mystics, and British Evangelicals such as John Wesley and George Whitefield, who, even in their public denials of mysticism, nevertheless demonstrated its strong influence in their ministries. Mystical and pietistic expressions impacted the religious, social, and political life of the lowcountry more than has been previously recognized. Evangelical Pietism's mid-eighteenth century infusion prompted some to correctly recognize its subjective (i.e. inwardly focused and …

Welcome to the Wokalup Research Station Reunion.

The hint of having a Reunion was first mentioned two years ago and then again 12 months ago but as everyone knows, time flies past so quickly. With Wokalup about to have a change in direction and become part of the Education Department it was felt that it was a most appropriate time to have the long awaited Reunion whilst Wokalup Research Station was still part of Agriculture Western Australia or it just wouldn’t happen.

We had to rely on peoples’ memories to collate an invitation list so if anyone was overlooked please …

Boycott!: Louise Imogen Guiney And The American Protective Association, Patricia Fanning

Patricia J. Fanning

Irish-American poet and author Louise Imogen Guiney endured anti-Catholic discrimination in Boston during the 1890’s. Well known to contemporary Bostonians as both a writer and the daughter of an Irish Roman Catholic Civil War officer, Guiney was appointed postmaster in Auburndale in January 1894. She initially liked the job’s duties, pay, and stability. However, many residents of Auburndale, including those associated with the anti-Catholic American Protective Association, boycotted the post office by not buying stamps there. As a result, in October 1894 her salary was cut. Guiney’s friends subsequently led a counterattack that resulted in stamp purchases coming to Auburndale …

"There Was No Middle Ground": Anne Braden And The Southern Social Justice Movement, Cate Fosl Dec 1998

"There Was No Middle Ground": Anne Braden And The Southern Social Justice Movement, Cate Fosl

Cate Fosl

Anne McCarty Braden is a southern white anti-racist activist who made a dramatic break with segregationist culture in the years just after World War II and committed her life to the cause of racial and social justice. Braden found her life's work and meaning through the racial justice movement in the South, and the longevity of her activism has made her into a sort of "conscience" for the white South, a reminder that whites bear an equal stake in opposing racism. This article is essentially bio-graphical, framing her (1) political transformation; (2) early activism; (3) Kentucky sedition case and (4) …
