Theses and Dissertations

In 1868, Brigham Young signed a grading contract with the Union Pacific Railroad to work on the transcontinental line in Utah. He sublet the job to other contractors who completed the work in February 1869. When the project was finished, there was still a great deal of money owed to Brigham Young by the Union Pacific and because of their financial difficulties, they were not able to meet the obligation immediately. To resolved the debt, Young sent Bishop John Sharp and Joseph A. Young to Boston in an effort to effect a settlement with the company. They obtain a partial …

A Study To Determine Reasons Why Lds Students Were Not Enrolled In Lds Seminary In The Southern Alberta Seminary District During 1970-71, Robert Owen Mcclung

Theses and Dissertations

Religious education in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as given by the seminaries is to help youth achieve a meaningful testimony that God lives, Jesus is the Christ, and Joseph Smith is a prophet of God. The purpose of this study was to determine why some youth were not taking advantage of this training by enrolling in seminary.
It was determined that the teachers were a negligible reason for lack of enrollment. Rather, the reasons stemmed more from a lack of awareness of the nature of the seminary program by some priesthood leaders, by the youth and …

"One thing American Indians don't lack is Indian experts. All told, there are probably more experts than Indians. For example, on the poverty-stricken Oglala Sioux reservation at Pine Ridge, S.D., sixty-four research projects are currently under way with a combined cost in academic salaries alone that would feed all the hungry children on the reservation ... A Comparative Study Of The Book Of Mormon Secret Combinations And The American Mafia Organization, Ray G. Morley Jan 1972

A Comparative Study Of The Book Of Mormon Secret Combinations And The American Mafia Organization, Ray G. Morley

Theses and Dissertations

The Book of Mormon and the Book of Moses, sacred scripture of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have woven into their pages a brief history of secret combinations on the "American" continent. Secret combinations have caused the destruction of three previous civilizations that have existed on this continent.

The prophet Moroni warned the Latter-day American inhabitants that "This secret combination... shall be among you..." (Ether 8:24).

The evidence summarized in this study leads one to the conclusion that the American Mafia Organization (Cosa Nostra) is the same organization warned against in sacred scripture.

A Study Of Evidences Related To Lds Church History As Reflected In Volumes I Through Xiii Of The Journal Of Discourses, Paul C. Richards

Theses and Dissertations

How much historical information pertaining to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is contained in the Journal of Discourses? How and where can it be found amid the nearly ten thousand pages of printed matter, much of which is non-historical? How accurate is the historical information in the Journal of Discourses? These three questions pose the problem that this study is designed to handle.

A recent Associated Press news story by Bernard Gavzer makes a startling, frightening comparison between the conditions which marked the lives of people in minority communities in this country during the 1960's, and the conditions which affect their lives today.

"As bad as things were then. . . they are worse now. Jobs, police, hostility, housing, schools, welfare, medical care. Bad. And a change, too, in many people. Despair, isolation, a notion that the color of evil is white."

Osiris, God Of Ancient Egypt And A Brief Background Of Egyptian Mythology, Carol Pendleton Jan 1972

Osiris, God Of Ancient Egypt And A Brief Background Of Egyptian Mythology, Carol Pendleton

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

In a country which has been subjected to so many inflows of various peoples, languages, and cultural patterns as has Egypt, one may expect to find a great diversity of deities and a complex and inconsistent theology. To differentiate the principal gods is the first step toward understanding the growth of the Egyptian religion. For in instances where polytheism can be traced back to its earliest stages we find that it usually has developed from a combination of monotheistic beliefs. It is improbable to suppose that a people would unite two gods, both of which belonged to them originally; there …

A Study Of Mormon Knowledge Of The American Far West Prior To The Exodus (1830-February, 1846), Lewis Clark Christian Jan 1972

A Study Of Mormon Knowledge Of The American Far West Prior To The Exodus (1830-February, 1846), Lewis Clark Christian

Theses and Dissertations

The American West prior to 1800 was relatively an obscure and unexplored region. However, by 1846, it had been traversed by no less than three government expeditions, and numerous mountain men and adventurers. There was an abundance of guides, maps, and books in print by 1846 for the homeseeker traveling west of the Mississippi River.

The Mormon knowledge and interest in the West began as early as 1832. Throughout the 1830's and early 1840's, as the saints moved West in the face of persecution, the Rocky Mountains were often spoken of as the future Zion of the Church. In 1842, …

An Historical Analysis Of The Word Of Wisdom, Paul H. Peterson Jan 1972

An Historical Analysis Of The Word Of Wisdom, Paul H. Peterson

Theses and Dissertations

The Word of Wisdom was announced by Joseph Smith as a revelation from God in 1833. The revelation prohibited the use of alcohol, tobacco, tea, and coffee. Its pronouncement came at a time when temperance movements were conspicuous throughout America.

Interpretations and attitudes have changed toward the Word of Wisdom over the years. Before 1840 many Mormons considered abstinence important though Joseph Smith stressed moderation. Observance became lax as Mormons treked westward to settle Utah territory. Brigham Young stressed obedience to the revelation in the 1860's but never made observance obligatory. Under John Taylor in 1883, a Word of Wisdom …
