Reconstructing Molly Welsh: Race, Memory And The Story Of Benjamin Banneker's Grandmother, Sandra W. Perot

Molly Welsh, oral tradition captured in the nineteenth century tells us, was a white Englishwoman who worked as an indentured servant. The same tradition has it that she owned slaves, although she is said to have married (or formed a union with) one of them. I aim not only to recover the life of Molly Welsh Banneker, but also to consider its various tellings—probing in particular at Molly’s shifting racial status. By examining a multiplicity of social and cultural aspects of life for seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century Maryland women, I test whether these various narratives are even possible or plausible …

Marc Moreau was born in 1948 in Lewiston, Maine. His family is French Canadian, and the part of town where he grew up was a pocket for French-speaking people. It was referred to as a "Petit-Canada." Lewiston's economy centered on textile mills. All of his grandparents and both of his parents worked in the mills during their lives. His mother later became a nurse during World War II, and his father served in the army during that time but later returned to the mills. Moreau has a younger sister and brother. Lee Stevens of the International Independent Showmen's Association discusses his career with the circus, beginning with an account of joining the circus when he was fifteen. He describes the teachings of clown college, the philosophies and culture of circus troupes, his tours with various circuses, and specifics of his clown acts and work as a circus animal trainer. He also discusses his courtship and relationship with his circus performer wife, Judy.
