Within recent years the priesthood correlation program of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has received significant emphasis from the leaders of the Church, so much so that it has been regarded by some as a new forceful program for the perfecting of the Saints. However, research reveals that the principles of priesthood correlation have always been a part of the restored Church.
The purpose of this thesis is to write a history of the correlation program of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with particular emphasis on the period 1908 to February 1972.

The Box Elder Stake Academy was a part of the Church System of Academies under the direction of Karl G. Maeser. The historical setting of Box Elder County is rather unique. It was here that Lorenzo Snow directed one of the most successful forms of the United Order. The nearby city of Corinne was established as one of the few gentile cities in Utah, and from there a new crusade to end Mormon rule in Utah was begun.
The Box Elder Stake Academy was one of the first academies created under the direction of the First Presidency of the Church. …

In 1831, Jackson County, Missouri, was designated as a place of refuge for the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Attempts to establish permanent residence in their Zion ended in bloodshed and violence. An army was raised to go to the aid of those cast out of their homes. This thesis pays particular attention to the recruiting of the army and the gathering of money and provisions, the trek to Missouri, and the interaction of those promoting and opposing the camp.

Whether in his capacity as a lawyer, soldier, legislator or friend, he remained steadfast to his beliefs and principles, though often in the minority.

This study is a history of the schools and educational programs organized and maintained by the LDS Church while the saints resided in Ohio and Missouri between the years of 1831 and 1839. The instructors, curriculum, organizational structure, and the purpose of each school is given when information in these areas was available. In Kirtland, the Church organized the School of the Prophets, School of the Elders, Kirtland High School, Hebrew School, a singing school, a writing school, and a few grammar schools. Religious education in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as given by the seminaries is to help youth achieve a meaningful testimony that God lives, Jesus is the Christ, and Joseph Smith is a prophet of God. The purpose of this study was to determine why some youth were not taking advantage of this training by enrolling in seminary.
It was determined that the teachers were a negligible reason for lack of enrollment. Rather, the reasons stemmed more from a lack of awareness of the nature of the seminary program by some priesthood leaders, by the youth and …

In early Church history, several men were designated by the title of Assistant President, or Associate President, but only Oliver Cowdery, and later Hyrum Smith, held the actual office which is the subject of the present study. That office is properly titled Associate President.
The office of Associate President fulfilled the requirements of the law of witnesses, and was a priesthood office. The Associate President assisted in bearing the keys of the last dispensation, and was acknowledged as the second ranking member of the First Presidency. In 1868, Brigham Young signed a grading contract with the Union Pacific Railroad to work on the transcontinental line in Utah. He sublet the job to other contractors who completed the work in February 1869. When the project was finished, there was still a great deal of money owed to Brigham Young by the Union Pacific and because of their financial difficulties, they were not able to meet the obligation immediately. To resolved the debt, Young sent Bishop John Sharp and Joseph A. Young to Boston in an effort to effect a settlement with the company. They obtain a partial …

This thesis gives an account of the establishment and development of the LDS Church in Switzerland without attempting to record a comprehensive chronological history. Instead, emphasis has been placed on beginnings and major historical developments.
In 1850, T. B. H. Stenhouse began teaching the "restored gospel" in French-Switzerland, at Geneva. Proselyting began in German-Switzerland in 1854. Despite mob violence and opposition from the clergy, press and civil authorities, some 9,846 joined the Church and 4,700 of these emigrated to "Zion." The discouragement of emigration, along with new emphasis on missionary work and improved proselyting methods, brought an unprecedented growth in …

The history of the South African Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (1853-1970) describes the progress of the Church in South Africa from its inception until the present time. Missionary proselyting activities in the land are traced, and the major historical developments of the mission are discussed.
In 1853 three missionaries began Mormon proselyting activities in the Cape Province and within six months they had baptized forty-five persons, established two branches, and organized the first conference of the Church.

The hymnal of the Latter-day Saints first proposed only shortly after the organization of the Church and published continually every few years between 1835 and 1871, is a remarkably accurate indicator of the changing fortunes and beliefs of the early Saints. The first hymnal, gathered by Emma Smith, uncompromisingly sets forth the basic Mormon belief in man's free agency, his innate perfectability, and his kinship to his Heavenly Father. The History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New Zealand begins with the arrival of Mormon missionaries in New Zealand in 1854. They established themselves firmly among the Maori people during the 1880's. Their success was influenced by certain Maori prophecies and by the translation of the Book of Mormon into Maori. The LDS church made successful efforts in educating it's members by establishing schools as early as 1886. The mission established the Maori Agriculture College in 1913 and the Church College of New Zealand in 1958. A highlight in the history of the mission was …

The purpose of this writing is to present a biography of George Reynolds from 1842 through 1872. This study was made using the historical approach of doing research. The primary sources were the "Journal of George Reynolds" in six volumes and personal interviews with his living descendants. Other unpublished documents were discovered, such as copies of letters and short sketches, and were used in the writing.

He was born in Karlshamn, Sweden, to Lutheran parents. While still in his teens, he joined the Baptist Church. After two years of study at Betelseminariet, he became a Baptist minister. Between 1872 and 1886, he rose to prominence among Scandinavian Baptists and became the General Secretary of the Norwegian Baptist Union in 1879. The Mormon Church has for years been given credit by historians for the settlement of Carson Valley. Prior to 1854 the LDS Church actually had no connection with that valley except that it was part of the Utah Territory, which the Church controlled. When political dissension against the Mormons developed in Carson Valley, Brigham Young decided to organize the area into a county in 1854. The following year he sent Orson Hyde and other officials there to organize the county government. Four separate and distinct Schools of the Prophets were organized by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Joseph Smith Jr. organized the first school in the spring of 1833, and it functioned periodically until 1837. Brigham Young organized the second school in December 1867, as a part of the University of the State of Deseret. It functioned until August of 1872 when Brigham Young disbanded it because members failed to adhere to its rules. This thesis pertains to the efforts of the Mormons in establishing their Church among the Irish and is arranged to give a chronological account of activities there. A brief background of the establishment of Christianity in Ireland and a knowledge of numerous conflicts between Catholics and Protestants helps to understand the complex religious interaction occurring at the time Mormonism was introduced in that country. The 1900 elections have been little touched in historical studies of Utah. However 1900 was a year of special interest and deserves an examination. In that year a Special Election was held, all state offices were up for renewal and a Presidential Election took place.
The special election was necessary because B. H. Roberts had been denied his seat in the United States Congress. Roberts was excluded because he was a polygamist. It was the writer's purpose to determine the reason students discontinued seminary before obtaining a fourth-year certificate from the Burley L. D. S. Seminary between the years 1961-1965. In addition to this, means of helping to solve the problems of the students who discontinued seminary were sought. Questionnaires were sent to 92 students who had discontinued seminary; a questionnaire was also given to 61 students who were still in seminary. The results of these questionnaires were tabulated by the Brigham Young University Data Processing Service. Of the 92 students who discontinued seminary and received questionnaires, 66 (70 per cent) were …

The Latter-day Saints were good colonizers, possibly because they were repeatedly forced by persecution to seek new homes in the wilderness. Having established themselves in Salt Lake Valley (1847), they began almost immediately to expand their domain. Their Prophet, Brigham Young, sent groups of Mormons to colonize the surrounding valleys, and within a few years there were many Mormon settlements beyond the bounds of Salt Lake Valley. Bear Lake Valley in southeastern Idaho and northern Utah was one of these early settlements.

Amos Milton Musser, the second son and fourth child of Samuel and Anna Barr Musser, was born in Donegal Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, May 20, 1830. When he was four years old, his father died. after three years of widowhood, his mother remarried, but her husband, Abraham Bitner, soon died, leaving her with two additional children.

Joseph Smith organized a group called Seventies in the Mormon Church early in 1835. They are one of three primary groups in the Higher or Melchizedek Priesthood. They were said to be Elders with a special calling to preach the Gospel among the nations of the earth. Their calling was said to be apostolic because they were to assist the Twelve Apostles in preaching the Gospel and administering Church affairs under their direction. They were a general Church Quorum, and not considered a part of stake organization.
