Irma Helen Hopkins was born in Horatio, Arkansas, May 15, 1930. As a student at Ouachita College, she began studying journalism major and won awards for her writing, but then pursued music. She graduated from Ouachita Baptist College in 1952 with a B.A. in violin and speech; Southwestern Seminary with a B.M.S. in voice and choral conducting; M.M. in voice from George Peabody College in Nashville, and earned a doctorate in musical arts at Temple University. She taught at Mars Hill College, George Peabody College, West Virginia Wesleyan College, the University of Pittsburgh, and then at Murray State University. She …

Whidbey Island is the largest of the islands composing Island County, Washington. The island is approximately thirty miles north of Seattle, and lies between the Olympic Peninsula and the I-5 corridor of western Washington. M. K. Sandford, formerly of Arkadelphia, photographed scenes in the area near her home there.

These three volumes contain photography by M. K. Sandford, primarly of nature and wildlife in the Whidbey Island area.

Ellis R. Bennett Papers, Mattison Griffin

Ellis R. Bennett of Union County, Arkansas, served in Europe during World War I as a part of the United States Army, Company B, 13th Engineers. The unit consisted of men experienced in various phases of the operation of railways. Ellis Bennett characterized his position as an "operator," and his interest in communications continued after his military service was over. Bennett died in 1945 at the Army and Navy Hospital in Hot Springs. He was buried at Forest Hill Cemetery.

This collection contains numerous items from the World War I era that illustrate Ellis Bennett's military service and family life. …

This bibliography brings together the writings of Vincent J. Lapomarda, S.J. from his fifty years in academia serving as a professor of history at the College of the Holy Cross. While the main focus of this bibliography is his years as a college professor, it does not exclude unpublished writings from graduate school nor published articles before his career as a professor began. The whole, or as much of it as possible, is a record of how one historian has gone about searching for the sources, evaluating these sources and writing his own histories.

This case study examines the development of a new program to foster genealogical research in an academic library that did not encourage or promote genealogical research. In early 2014, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries set a strategic initiative of increased outreach. This chapter examines the historical antecedents of recordkeeping and archives in Puerto Rico, during both Spanish and U.S. colonial rules. It also explores the history and current issues of the Archivo General de Puerto Rico (General Archive of Puerto Rico). This historical analysis is made within the context of colonialism, examining the effects of Puerto Rico’s colonial status (during the Spanish colonial period and the current period under United States colonial management) on the mission and work of the AGPR. We argue that while the Archivo General was created to address the chaotic management of government records, its founding reflected …

In the post-War on Poverty years, certain quarters of the U.S. library profession expressed a growing desire to enable librarians to beome more relevant and responsive to low-income, primarily African American, urban communities. This article traces how ideas and trends shifted within library discourse over roughly a decade starting in the mid-1960s, and offers an overview of the urban librarian training programs that emerged in the early 1970s. The latter half of the article, based on archives of internal and external correspondence, funder reports, and other primary documents, examines in greater detail the case of three related projects that were …

The article demonstrates how Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) geographic headings for the Southern Levant mirror the political investment of Congress and the American public in Middle East politics over the last thirty years. The headings’ evolution as well as Library of Congress rules governing their creation is charted in detail. These LCSH headings contrast markedly with those established in other national libraries (BnF, DNB) and independent value vocabularies (TGN, GeoNames), and global opinion regarding the legal status of the occupied territories. Virginia’s city and county court records are not only the resources used to write and interpret history, but they have a history in and of themselves--if they survived. This paper traces the historical development of library catalogs from primitive catalogs in ancient times to current next generational catalogs, which are summarized into three stages: the agricultural catalog stage, the industrial catalog stage and the information catalog stage. In particular, this paper focuses on the discussion of the rise of users’ expectations on library catalogs at different stages and gives emphasis to what impact they have created accordingly.
