In Danish settlements throughout the United States,

Jmmigrants often formed reading clubs within which their

members could read, discuss, and circulate recent Danish

publications. One such club, the "Tolvten" (The Dozen),

was founded in Chicago in 1897 and remained in existence

until 1977.

Academic Freedom And Faculty Careers: A Case Study Of Four Nobel Laureate Exiles, 1930-1940, Timothy Dale Norton

The purpose of this historical study was to evaluate the consequences that the politically-determined conventions of academic freedom in Germany and in the United States had on the careers of four elite scientists before and after their emigration resulting from the threats of Nazism. This problem consisted of three distinct conceptual parts: (1) academic freedom, as a concept, (2) the political conventions of academic freedom within pre-World War II Germany and within pre- and World War II America, and (3) the effect that these definitions had on the careers of Albert Einstein, James Franck, Otto Meyerhof, and Otto Stern. PREFACE: One of the most interesting classes I completed during my Master of Liberal Studies program was MLS 517: From Magic Mountain to Alexanderplatz - Seminar on the Weimar Republic under the leadership of Dr. Nancy Decker. This class traced the Weimar Republic's political liberalism and cultural progressive society to its succumbing to fascism. The rich and complex history of the Weimar continued to stimulate my interest, especially the remarkable cultural achievements of the period. The Bauhaus, particularly, had influence on architecture, graphic design, theater production, and nearly every aspect of the visual arts. The impact seemed incalculable. My goal …

This study will show that this familiar figure of Jesus and the motto Evangelizare pauperibus misit me both date from the time of Saint Vincent. However, the use of both of these together, with the motto surrounding the oval, dates only from the nineteenth century.
